How much of a risk is Parvovirus?

Dr. Ian Dunbar has been giving seminars to veterinarians for decades and regularly surveys them about the prevalence of Parvovirus in their communities.

Usually, he asks how many dogs died from Parvo at your clinic in the past year. The vast majority of vets answer zero or one, and then the occasional vet says 20 or 30 or more.

Often, those are vets that work with a lot of shelter or rescue dogs, and often, in low-income areas with lower vaccination rates.

That said, there are also huge variations between different parts of the USA and world, so it's a great idea to ask you local vets about how many dogs they have seen with Parvo in the past year.

Parvovirus is a serious illness and you certainly don't want your puppy to get it.

The good news is, if you vaccinate your pup and take some basic precautions, it's very easy to safely socialize your puppy, especially to people, without exposing them to any significant risk of contracting Parvovirus.

Keep your pup off the ground in any place where an infected dog might have been. If you want to be very safe, this means carry your pup in all public spaces, especially if you know that Parvovirus is common in your local area. You can also keep outdoor shoes outside and away for your pup, to eliminate the possibility of tracking infected urine or f***s into your home.

But please, don't let the risk of Parvovirus stop you from properly socializing your pup! Young pups need lots and lots of socialization, they need to meet new people, see new things, and go to new places! Without adequate socialization, most pups will develop fearfulness, reactivity, and aggression issues as they enter adolescence.
