While on my bicycle along the Hudson River, I came upon this artist.

The Wards Island Bridge 1,247 foot span and then the Triborough ( or RFK Bridge ) Manhattan to Queens spanning around 2,780 feet. I crossed both of them twice on my bicycle to get to and from a birthday party at the Bohemian Beer Garden in Astoria, yesterday. Best way to tour.

From Liberty Island, I was able to get this shot of the Empire State Building and 432 Park Ave behind it. 432 Park is taller than the Empire and currently boasts the tallest rooftop in the city.

I have FINALLY finished reading all 562 pages of David McCullough's "definitive" work: "The Great Bridge" The Epic Story of the Building of the Brooklyn Bridge. McCullough won the Pulitzer Prize for his book on Truman and again for his book on John Adams. This book, however , was as hard to read as the author's name is to spell. He is very stingy in his telling of the magnificent character, intellect, personality and all around greatness of Emily Roebling who, you may remember, was the wife of Washington Roebling - the Chief Engineer - and who, after her husband was paralyzed, acted as Supervising Manager and without whom the bridge's history would have been very different and most likely not nearly as successful. While the bridge is the quintessential example of technology achieved before its time, the author puts way too much emphasis on occupational details that are lost on the layman. I can now answer questions about the building of the bridge that will make the questioner sorry he or she ever asked. I'm just not sure that that's a good thing. But every now and then the author's research and imagination pushed through; like this letter that Washington Roebling wrote to Emily while he was fighting in the the Civil War:
"After all dear Emmie, pray tell me what is love? Is it kissing each other, is it tickling, hugging, etc. one another? Is it writing Billy Duxes, kicking each other's shins under the table? That must be it I think - the shins!"

And finally - a most beautiful last paragraph right before the epilogue:

In another time and in what would seem like another world, on a day when two young men were walking on the moon, a very old woman on Long Island would tell reporters that the public excitement over the feat was not so much compared to what she had seen "on the day they opened the Brooklyn Bridge"

I'm glad there are tourists with more of an interest in sports than my own. I might have never discovered this intriguing mobile made of gold sneakers on the top floor of Niketown on 57th street. Catch it before they take it down!
