Join us for the next IEEE Biometrics Council !

On January 17, 2024, the Council will host the webinar, “Continuous Authentication – Still a Thing After 20 Years?” The webinar is free, but registration is required.

Listen as Dr. Terence Sim, an associate professor at the School of Computing, National University of Singapore, explores the concept of Continuous Authentication (CA), a security measure where a computer system continuously verifies the identity of the user during a session. This approach is contrasted with One-Time Authentication (OTA), which only verifies identity at the session’s start.

Although CA was first proposed in 2000, it has gained significant attention recently due to the widespread use of smartphones and IoT devices. The webinar will trace the evolution and progress of CA over the past 20 years, addressing the key challenges it faces and suggesting potential areas for future research.

Spotlight on: more award winners!

One major component of September’s IEEE International Joint Conference on Biometrics, which took place in Ljubljana, Slovenia, was the live demonstration and exhibition sessions. During these presentations, researchers are given the opportunity to showcase their contributions in the area of biometrics. The sessions are interactive and often leave a lasting impression—both on the attendees and the larger biometric field—as researchers display new methods and technologies, system prototypes, and experimental features of mature systems.

The Best Demo Award singles out the most impressive presentation from those sessions. For 2023, Federico Nocentini, Professor Claudio Ferrari, and Professor Stefano Berretti took the top honors in the category, for their demonstration titled, “S2L+S2D: Identity-Preserving Speech-Driven 3D Talking Heads.”

Spotlight on: more award-winning conference papers!

This year at the International Joint Conference on Biometrics, which took place in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in September, the power of international collaboration was on full display during the awards ceremony. A joint project between student researchers (and their advising professors) in Portugal and India resulted in the winning entry for the IAPR Best Biometrics Student Paper Award.

Ashwin Prakash, Thejaswin S, Athira Nambiar, and Alexandre Bernardino took the top honors in the category this year, for their paper titled, “Adapt-FuseNet: Context-aware Multimodal Adaptive Fusion of Face and Gait Features Using Attention Techniques for Human Identification.”

Spotlight on: more award winners!

Though the weeks are quickly passing by, we can’t forget to look back and showcase all of the winners from the awards ceremony during September’s IEEE International Joint Conference on Biometrics.

At the 2023 ceremony, the BTAS/IJCB 5-Year Highest Impact Award went to the paper “Multi-task Learning for Detecting and Segmenting Manipulated Facial Images and Videos,” authored by Huy H. Nguyen, Fuming Fang, Junichi Yamagishi, and Isao Echizen.

This unique award recognizes the paper from the 2019 IEEE Biometrics Theory, Applications, and Systems conference that has the highest number of citations thus far (that is, five years from its publishing). Originally presented at BTAS in 2019, before that conference and the International Conference on Biometrics combined into , the work presented in this paper has made a significant impact in detecting manipulated images and videos in the biometrics field.

In the abstract, the authors share how they had “designed a convolutional neural network that uses the multi-task learning approach to simultaneously detect manipulated images and videos and locate the manipulated regions for each query.” Though research is racing ahead in leaps and bounds, it is always important to look back and take account of the great progress made—working together, building upon the discoveries of our talented peers around the world.

Spotlight on: award winners!

One of the most anticipated moments of the annual IEEE International Joint Conference on Biometrics is the awards ceremony, during which the IEEE Biometrics Council and the International Association of Pattern Recognition ( ) recognize event participants across several categories.

At the 2023 ceremony, the IEEE Best Paper Award went to the paper “CoNAN: Conditional Neural Aggregation Network For Unconstrained Face Feature Fusion,” authored by Bhavin Jawade, Deen Dayal Mohan, Dennis Fedorishin, Srirangaraj Setlur, and Venu Govindaraju.

Co-author Bhavin Jawade, a graduate student at the University of Buffalo who is currently pursuing a Ph.D in computer science, said the paper “presents a novel approach toward face featuring pooling.”

The abstract explains that, in order to overcome the limitations of generating quality metadata for extremely low-resolution faces captured in long-range and high altitude settings, the authors “Propose a feature distribution conditioning approach called CoNAN for template aggregation. Specifically, our method aims to learn a context vector conditioned over the distribution information of the incoming feature set, which is utilized to weigh the features based on their estimated informativeness.” Read the full paper here: https://arxiv.org/abs/2307.10237.

Spotlight on: award-winning student papers from the conference!

The deadline for submissions is this Monday, October 2, 2023. As authors prepare to submit, we would like to highlight the Best Student Paper award winner from last year’s conference.

Co-authors Tailin Chen, Desen Zhou, Jian Wang, Shidong Wang, Qian He, Chuanyang Hu, Errui Ding, Yu Guan, and Xuming He captured top honors at FG 2023, which took place in Waikoloa, Hawaii, in January 2023, for their article titled, “Part-aware Prototypical Graph Network for One-shot Skeleton-based Action Recognition.”

“In this paper, we study the problem of one-shot skeleton-based action recognition, which poses unique challenges in learning transferable representation from base classes to novel classes, particularly for fine-grained actions,” the authors explain in the abstract. “To overcome the [limitations], we propose a part-aware prototypical representation for one-shot skeleton-based action recognition…We also devise a class-agnostic attention mechanism to highlight important parts for each action class.” (Read the full paper here: https://www.computer.org/csdl/proceedings-article/fg/2023/10042671/1KOuXyhlfEI.)

Did you notice? IJCB has a new look for 2023!

This year, the IEEE International Joint Conference on Biometrics debuted a brand-new logo, featured prominently on the event website and all marketing materials for the upcoming conference.

What’s the story behind the design?

Featuring the Biometrics Council’s signature red-and-gray color scheme, the mark portion of the logo takes inspiration from a fingerprint and the incredible identification technologies at the core of the biometrics field. Just as with biometrics, the fingerprint contains more than meets the eye: Look closely and you will see the letters “I,” “J,” “C,” and “B” neatly highlighted within the lines.

Get ready to see IJCB’s new logo front-and-center when the program kicks off in Ljubljana, Slovenia, on September 25-28, 2023.
