✨️Hidden Monastery in Blaca / island Brač ✨

Tucked away in the rugged hills of Blaca, this hidden treasure is a must-see for anyone looking to connect with the spiritual history of Dalmatia. The Blaca Desert Monastery started as nothing more than a simple stone cave, where the first hermit found peace and solitude in the harsh, remote landscape. Over the years, though, it transformed into a stunning, multi-story complex, built by dedicated monks who embraced the quiet life far from the world’s distractions.

The monastery grew over time, with monks adding rooms for cooking, storage, and living, each one blending naturally with the surrounding cliffside. The buildings, with their charming tiled roofs and stone walls, have a beautiful patina, giving them an aged, rustic feel that fits perfectly in the wild, untamed landscape. It’s a place where the old meets the new, with picturesque balconies and hidden corners all carved from the stone itself.

Originally founded in 1551 by two Glagolitic monks, the monastery continued to thrive for centuries, housing generations of monks who lived in total isolation. They found everything they needed within the monastery’s walls—breathtakingly beautiful, simple, and functional, from bread ovens to storage rooms. The monastery remained in use until 1963, when the last monks left, but its legacy of tranquility and devotion still lingers in the air.

Today, Blaca Monastery is a peaceful retreat for those who visit, offering an intimate look into the life of the hermits who once called this place home. It’s a place where time seems to stand still, and nature’s beauty surrounds you at every turn.

Morning hike through the forest from Gožul to Vidova gora, the highest peak of all the Adriatic islands (778 m).

Our harsh and wild nature was the perfect setting for storytelling; The island of Brač is full of myths and legends.

On the way to the top of the mountain, we visited pools where Illyrian tribes collected rainwater 2,000 years ago.

"You may well think you don’t need a guide when visiting Brac, but you probably don’t know what you don’t know! Reflecting on how our time there would have been without having done our tour with Slaven and his ongoing advice while we were there, I know (without a shadow of doubt) that we would not have had quite as extraordinary time as we did. Even if we go back, I will probably want to tour again with him – next time will be engaging his amazing story telling talent. So, don’t hesitate – your time will be enriched in so many ways with him."
