"What this tool has done is that it illuminates a totality of something... We have the ability to coach 'of all the things that you're overwhelmed by, what are the things that cause the most pain?' And so it becomes digestible. I've just seen this great sense of pride and dignity blossom in a person that feels empowered to be in control of their own destiny.” - Daron Babcock, Director of Community Transformation Stand Together Foundation

In September 2024, Alliance Niyukuri, MD and his team achieved something momentous - they saved the life of a newborn diagnosed with Gastroschisis in rural Burundi, where the condition previously meant death within 24 hours for any babies born with it.

Niyukuri built the first pediatric surgery program in the country with the connections, learnings, and support he gained through his fellowship with UCSF’s Center for Health Equity in Surgery and Anesthesia (CHESA). His interactions with UCSF faculty and students helped him take great strides and eventually led to that baby boy surviving his first 24 hours with what could have been a fatal condition.

"We must fundamentally change the current reality that anyone may live, die or be disabled simply due to where in the world they happen to be born, the neighborhood they live in, the color of their skin or their personal or family circumstances.” - Doruk Ozgediz, MD Director of UCSF’s Center for Global Surgery and Health Equity and CHESA co-founder

Read Niyukuri's story and learn how CHESA's network of fellows is leading a medical revolution in low-income countries around the world.

Since 2020, the Center for Health Equity in Surgery and Anesthesia has used research, education and advocacy to improve access to safe surgical, anesthetic and perioperative care in underserved areas of the U.S. and globally, as well as build a pipeline of care providers from diverse backgrounds.

"Even as you're trying to bring the change that you're committed to, you need to go over and above, to convince those with resources that you can be trusted." - Teresa Njoroge

In a world where African-led social impact organizations are often overlooked, Atti Worku and Teresa Njoroge shine a light on the systemic inequities in global philanthropy — and call for change.

The African Visionary Fund is challenging this difficult truth head-on by serving as a conduit between funders and African organizations that lack funding opportunities. Learn more about their sector-changing work through this video:

For us in the social sector, we believe that maximizing impact means strengthening our resources. While many advocate for diversifying funding sources and adopting a come-one-come-all approach to resource generation, it may not be an ideal approach.

In a recent article by non-profit consultancy firm Mighty Ally, Smarter Good’s Jane Leu points out that working with multiple funding sources adds up to pressure for organizations to manage multiple models instead of focusing on scaling their impact. Jane suggests a more strategic approach to diversification: increasing the number of funders within a primary source to allow non-profits to concentrate on their mission while fostering sustainable growth.

Others agree, too, that it’s time to debunk the myth that diversified funding is the secret key to a non-profit’s success. What do you think?
