For us in the social sector, we believe that maximizing impact means strengthening our resources. While many advocate for diversifying funding sources and adopting a come-one-come-all approach to resource generation, it may not be an ideal approach.

In a recent article by non-profit consultancy firm Mighty Ally, Smarter Good’s Jane Leu points out that working with multiple funding sources adds up to pressure for organizations to manage multiple models instead of focusing on scaling their impact. Jane suggests a more strategic approach to diversification: increasing the number of funders within a primary source to allow non-profits to concentrate on their mission while fostering sustainable growth.

Others agree, too, that it’s time to debunk the myth that diversified funding is the secret key to a non-profit’s success. What do you think?

It was a meaningful and fun working lunch as we swapped stories and discussed Jennifer’s inspiring vision for SWB’s future. 🏆⚽ From her tattoo experience with the legendary Whang-od to the exciting leadership changes at SWB, the discussion was as enriching as it was enjoyable.

Earlier this year, we helped one of our partner clients write grant proposals for the solar electrification of an indigenous community in Asia and health clinics in refugee and host communities in Africa. The process was challenging as our writers had to navigate various approaches that would allow the funders to envision our client’s intended impact, without our client having to fit themselves into expectations of what they are not. From capturing success stories of previous projects to building a robust M&E mechanism and a sound budget, we stood by our partner client to ensure that we could accurately and authentically reflect their communities’ needs and priorities. Our collaboration eventually bore fruit - we were awarded the grant and our partner client will be able to bring 100% energy access to the homes of thousands of indigenous people and refugees!

It happens: funders’ priorities may quickly shift. But it doesn’t mean that those of nonprofits should too. Thought partnership means a collaborative process where nonprofits get a crucial fresh perspective on strategies including who to approach and what to pitch to accomplish optimal results.
