Nominate one woman who inspires you. Here, I’ll start. Joni Sweet is an ultimate inspiration to me. She started her freelance career less than two years ago and is absolutely crushing it. In just a few short years she has built a stable and successful freelance writing career making more money than any staff writer i know. Not only that she contributes to podcasts, is a yoga devotee, AND she paid off her student loans this year. That’s a lot of accomplishments for someone who has only been doing this location independent life for less than two years.

There are some places that, no matter how long you’ve been away, always feel like home. I’ve been fortunate to discover a few of these places in my travels, but none in particular is closer to my heart than: Puerto Escondido, a sleepy beach town on Mexico’s Oaxaca coast, where stress factors are non-existent and it seems that people are all out of cares to give. It’s heaven.

It’s one of those towns where authenticity and tourism seem to gel in harmony. Aussie surfers chase waves at dawn, while proprietors first speak to patrons in Spanish only. By night beachside surf bars with sandy floors and thatched roofs crank out Reggaetón as French Canadians and Israelis sip mezcal, while oaxaqueñas grill up delicious tlayudas on open, charcoal grills. I love this place.

Meet Grace. Grace came to Vaera Journeys having recently completed a 200-hour yoga teacher training. She knew her passion, but needed help finding the focus. Watching her develop her new business, from selecting its name to buying the URL to guiding the vision of what she wanted to become was inspiring.

“Being surrounded by these beautiful, inspiring, and empowering women was the best thing i could have done for myself because it gave me that extra push i needed to pursue my purpose project,” she says.

“I learned an extensive amount of useful information in the short time we had together. I created a new family there - one i will never forget because we now have a community where we can ask each other for help and advice whenever we need it. A community that can help keep me accountable so that i stay true to myself and my purpose.”

Meet Becca. Becca is a recent convert to the freelance hustle. She left her full-time PR gig to pursue her own path. Now she’s handling her own clients, as well as building a business that creates custom marketing websites for international yacht brokers. She’s also a recent Vaera alum!

Recently receiving the award for most popular dance company in Cuba, Habana Compas Dance was started as a community project by one of Cuba’s most prominent choreographers, Liliet Rivera.

She wanted to create a new dance style that was uniquely Cuban by fusing traditional Latin dance (think salsa, rhumba, flamenco) with Afro Cuban rhythms and Santeria percussion. One of the fascinating aspects of this story is that teaching percussion to women is forbidden in Santeria.

Habana Compas Dance teaches percussion to every dancer. In order to give back to her community while teaching this new style, she founded a completely free dance school.

As part of our September journey we will see a private mini performance in their working studio with the troupe and then have a Q&A with Liliet and the dancers.

Our Puerto Vallarta experience was absolutely inspiring and we still can’t get over it.

From a taco tour to some of PVs more local neighborhoods, to hiking its trails, hidden beaches, dinners with sunset views, and FIVE in-depth, motivational Mastermind Sessions, we covered a lot of ground in just six days.

Not to mention the WhatsApp chain that is still blowing up with our women exchanging business tips, personal successes, words of encouragement, and hilarious memes.

This was a group for the record books and our hearts wish we were all still together.
