Remember the swim platform frame work that required 2 summers to build? Well, we started to glass it this weekend!

I have to admit we were intimidated by the large overhead portion we had to glass...

With the help and advises of real skilled professionals (Al Whitaker, Boat Works Today and others), we successfully completed the first layer of overhead fibreglass, 6 hours of non stop hard work, running against time before batches of epoxy gel, yeah.

Nothing felt on our heads and the result is real good for DIY like us. And by the way Al, sorry if we used 1708 fibreglass and deviated from your plan, just a little 😉.

It is work in progress, but can’t wait to get to the end of this !

After taking out, restoring and solidifying the anchor post, we finally brought our Rocna 33 up. Thanks for the new free space in the garage and exciting moment !!! Next step will be to fit the horizontal Maxwell windlass to the plank and roller setup.

3 years ago I started to work from home on the anchor pulpit and the year before on the anchor stainless steel roller for our Rocna anchor. Today was the first fitting and trial on the boat itself. The pulpit is hand made from laminated mahogany. Almost lost 2 fingers on the router when I made the roller whole :) !

The lower box almost completed and ready to get the upper box on top. We still have some shaping to do on the box and fibreglassing, but the hardest steps are completed. We can already see the swim platform will add to the great lines of the vessel.

The start, after the old swim platform is removed and holes fixed.

We have been busy lately working on installing the new swim platform on the Morning Light. Our naval engineer recommended we build it off the boat and install it after. We tried, but because of the complexity of curves and angles of the transom, we finally opted to build it on the boat. No matter what, it is a lengthy process with hundreds of steps... Next pictures will show the initiation of the process !

I could not convince myself to put modern looking blocks on the mast :(... So I decide to make vintage wooden ones. It will be made of mahogany and stropped using "look-alike" h**p rope make of polyester. I will have to remember my splicing classes :)... The eyes are bronze ones and only the 50mm acetal sheaves from Ronstan will remember us we are in the 21st century !

Two blocks will have beckets, the whole set will prove a 6-1 weight ratio, setup in a disadvantage profile.

It is the real thing now ! Charles and Frederic are putting the hollow mast and boom together from Douglas fir. The mast will be 13.5 feet high and is stepped from 5 in to 3 in at the top. The boom will be 12 feet long, hollow as well, but in a rectangular shape in the middle to round at the end. All hand made in St-Clet, QC :) !

After removing the old ceiling, lifting up the flybridge floor from under and little frustration in the process :), we finally completed the ceiling of the main cabin. Lots of people got involved into this, Hal, Freres de Bois and Mo-tif, so thank to all for helping this project.

We have few adjustment to complete still, but it already looks awesome !

It was decided we would build a hollow mast using the birds mouth technique. Before we work on the real thing we practiced and made a fake mast with a 8'x10"x1" pin board (20$). Even glued with wood glue, the thing did not want to show signs of weakness . The practice results were amazingly strong and straight ! Thanks to Charles and Fred, wood worker artist at Les Frères de Bois for working in this (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Les-Frères-de-Bois/1378814549090438?fref=ts).

The original boat had a mast and aluminum boom mounted on the tail of the flybridge. We decided to rebuild it with wood and to make it self supported so we don't have to put standing rigging everywhere on the boat...

We made all the stress and load calculations following the maths in Skene's Elements of Yacht Design book (1975 edition).

To make it self supported, we had to build a tabernacle at least 24 inches high. We found a great one installed on a 100 years old Norwegian boat and we are doing a replica of it with Michel Samson, a retired passionate machine shop artist.

We added some modifications in the tabernacle design following the Grand Banks mast steps. Final results should show up in few weeks... Stay tuned !
