Have you ever seen the enormous straw sandal at Sensoji in Asakusa? This straw sandal, called Owaraji, stands at a height of 4.5 meters and weighs 2,500 kg! It was traditionally handcrafted by 800 citizens of Murayama City over the course of a month, as an offering to the temple. The Owaraji symbolizes the protective power of the Nio Guardians, serving as a charm against evil. Touching this Owaraji is believed to bestow blessings for safe travels and a smooth journey, making one a 'good walker.'

Tanabata is a festival based on a folklore story, celebrating a reunion of two deities, Orihime and Hikoboshi who are usually separated by milky way and only able to meet once a year, on the 7th day of the 7th month of the year. Resembling a milky way that leads up to the temple main hall, the candle night at Zojoji Tanabata Festival is bringing together everyone’s wishes on the milky way hoping it will all come true.

The dates of Tanabata Festival vary, from July to August. Some celebrate it according to the Gregorian calendar, 7th July, but some regions celebrate it according to the Lunar calendar.

Shinsekai 新世界
A lively place filled with good food, retro atmosphere and also famous for its iconic Tsutenkaku Tower, a well known landmark of the area. Constructed in 1912, the tower has been registered as a national tangible cultural property. It was the tallest building at that time at 75 meters but it was taken apart in World War II and rebuilt by the help of locals reaching 108 meters tall. The designer of the tower was Tachu Naito who also designed Tokyo Tower🗼A good photo spot even at night.

Here is Japan Cherry Blossom Flowering Forecast based on data released by Japan Meteorological Corporation on February 15, 2024. This forecast is for Somei Yoshino trees, the most common cherry blossom variety in Japan. Cherry blossom usually last about two weeks, and the full bloom period lasts only for a few days. Please be aware that it is only a forecast. Depending on the weather, the cherry blossom might bloom faster or later. Biei（美瑛）, at Hokkaido, a good place to take scenic photographic in winter.
Here are some of tree photo spots that are well known in the area:

1 - Just like how it looks, the tree is called the Christmas Tree. A 8-meters-high-tree, standing alone in the thick blanket of snow really make a good atmospheric photo spot.

2 - Seven Stars Tree. This tree once used on the Seven Stars to***co packaging design.

3 - Located close to the Seven Stars Tree, at the Patchwork Road, the lining of birch trees also great to be captured.

4 - Ken and Mary Tree was featured in Nissan Car commercial in 1972 and it was named after the couple that appeared in the commercial.

5-6 Other trees that accentuate the beautiful snowscape of Biei.

Sapporo Beer Garden and Museum, built in 1876, the brewery of Sapporo Beer is a place that marked the start of Japan’s beer history. In the museum, visitor can learn history of beer in Japan, its production, and the culture of beer in Japan. Gassho Houses at Shirakawago, in Gifu Prefecture, have been carefully well maintained with its years long of history that dates back to Edo period. In 1995 it was registered as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Its unique structure resembling an image of hands pressed together, the steep roof of the houses were made to endure harsh winter so it can stand heavy snow for generations at Takayama region. The direction of the houses were also adjusted so it could keep the temperature of the room cool in the summer. It’s beautiful to visit in any of the season but keep in mind to dress warmly for winter because it will be really cold!

Mt. Komagatake at Hokkaido.
Located north of Hakodate, this 1,131 meter-high active volcano offer an amazing view for visitor in every season. We had an opportunity to enjoy the breathtaking view of the mountain beyond Lake Onuma at the end of the winter season where the frozen lake began to breaking.

Fun Fact:
The top of the mountain used to be cone shaped, but it loss its shape after a major eruption that happened in 1640 and other eruptions after that.

Located in the city of Noboribetsu in Hokkaido, Noboribetsu Date Jidaimura is a cultural park where visitors could travel back hundred of years, immersing themselves traveling to the Edo period.

The park recreate the scenery and culture of the Edo period and offers visitor shows, attractions, and lots of other fun and unique activities, like taiken-dojo where you can try throwing shuriken, archery, or you can challenge yourself at ninja maze that filled with tricks and traps.

If you travel to Japan around New Year you must have seen this ornament sold at market and wonder what is this. This is Kagami Mochi, a traditional Japanese New Year decorations that is usually consist of 2 layers of round mochi, and an orange with an attached leaf put on top of it.

The mochi symbolize the year left behind and the new year ahead of it, the orange symbolize the continuation of a family from generation to generation which means giving prosperity and hope to the following descendants. Kagami Mochi will be put at home before new year and will be taken down and eaten on Kagami Biraki day, which traditionally falls on 11th day of the new year, that is Today!

Nowadays, there are a lot of cute designs and sizes we can choose from! They even sell Disney and anime themed Kagami Mochi. Which one do you prefer? 🤗

⚠️ Do not eat the mochi earlier than the Kagami Biraki Day, it believed can make the Kami Sama angry. And also don’t split open Kagami mochi with knife, instead use wooden hammer or just use your bare hand because in Japan to cut something blessed seems has a negative connotation to it.
