Deep into the remote vastness of the puna and surrounded by some of the highest peaks of the Andes, our adventure to the northeast corner of Argentina was a multi-day, multicoloured adventure.
The otherworldly columns of Campo de Piedra Pómez were formed by an ancient pyroclastic cloud and shaped by the harsh weather elements, while the origin of the Cono de Arita in the middle of one of the world’s largest salt flats is still unknown.
Puna means high and arid plateau, very much treeless, and is home to flora and fauna which can withstand the extreme conditions of dryness and significant temperature change during the day. And as we covered long distances by 4WD, we sometimes stopped at little oasis villages. There was one which was occupied by two squabbling siblings, each occupying a house on opposite ends of the oasis. This story does not seem uncommon, as I know of a similar story in a small village in the north of Chile.
