Janice and I took four of the boys on a little hike today. Nine miles in three hours. 1100’ elevation gain so not very steep.
We breed, train, and sell pack llamas. We also offer hiking and hunting multi-day adventures in AZ!

She’s already a week old!
Kofa! King of Arizona!
That’s what his name means, and he was a king on the trail yesterday leading the way!
We took Kofa and Kendrick (Floppy) on their first training hike carrying panniers. They met hikers and bikers along the trail, and they also practiced crossing a creek several times.
I really think these two are going to be great packers!
Our first female cria in two years!
She’s had a bit of a rough start. She was turning a little blue while being born and was very lethargic so I pulled her. She recovered quickly and was actually running around about 2 hours after being born!
Then, her mom wouldn’t let her nurse. She had the same problem with her last cria. She’s so full of milk she’s sore so I milked her to get her going and get some relief and she started letting her cria nurse. I gave the cria the milk I saved too. Now she’s sleeping off all the drama.
Janice weighed her so we can keep an eye on if she’s gaining weight. 36 pounds and a tall girl!
Prepping for something exciting!
What could it be?
Since we needed to move the little guys, we took advantage of the situation and put in a little halter training.
All three boys, Buckey (shown here), Teddy and Jerome did better with the halter training and leading!
Sorry for the fuzzy photo and the lack of posting lately.
Chris and I adventured out into the desert for a few days, and I just haven’t wanted to return to the real world.
After being unplugged for awhile, I came home and decided to focus on escaping again.
We have a bigger trip starting next week!

What do you think?
Happy Valentine’s Day to Chris (and Floppy)!
Chris has been my Valentine for 41 years!
I couldn’t ask for a better best friend, husband, father of our children, and business partner!
This is Georgie three years ago!
Superbowl Sunday!
Every year my siblings go up to the Grand Canyon for this weekend, and we have the best time!
Unfortunately, my brother Larry couldn’t make it this year, but sister Susan is here. Also, her son and his wife along with her parents are came up.
We had a beautiful day for a hike into the Canyon!
Check out the tips for wilderness adventures that I share in our new YouTube video!
The best suggestion is Tip #4, but don’t tell Chris!

Training day!
First time with a saddle and panniers!
Floppy, official name is Kendrick, is 21 months old. He was calm, but enthusiastic about hiking today! The panniers were no issue!
I am so excited about his progress!
I love to eat!
I serve fresh homemade food (and fresh brewed coffee) on our multi-day llama pack trips!
Actually, Ellsworth prefers tea with his breakfast!
A daily bath!
Washing up at the end of the day while out on a multi-day pack trip is so refreshing!
I’ve been backpacking and llama packing for over 50 years, and just a few years ago I discovered that taking a daily bath of some sort helps me sleep well at night and wake up fresh ready for the next day!
I started this routine after reading the book “The Old Lady on the Trail” by Mary E. Davison.
Mary always found a way to clean up at the end of the day after a hike. She described the different methods for making sure she had water for her bath no matter where she camped.
Thanks Mary, for this great tip!
Fall Multi-day Llama Pack Treks!
I know it isn’t even spring yet, but my calendar is already filling up with all sorts of adventures!
So, I’m already thinking about Fall trips to see the Aspens change color on the North Kaibab!
Are you working on plans for upcoming experiences?
A pile of llamas!
Just returned from picking up almost 5 tons of hay! We drive all the way to Grand Junction, Colorado, to buy hay because it is cheaper to make the long trip than to get it here in Arizona.
Besides, we get to visit our youngest daughter Phoebe who attends college in GJ!

Journaling!
As you probably know, I really enjoy writing in my journal out in the woods or desert!
Jotting down my thoughts on multi-day trips creates time for me to relax and reflect. I always return home with fresh ideas and motivated for whatever is next!
Drink anyone?
What’s for lunch, Chris?
We hiked in the desert today looking for a camp spot for a multi-day hike I have coming up in three weeks.
It was a beautiful 62°F!
Yes, I ate this breakfast in my house this morning!
Yes, I serve the same breakfast on my multi-day hikes!
I love sleeping in a tent!
The best part is my super cozy sleeping bag! I always have a hard time getting up in the morning because I’m so snug in my bed!
Then, I love eating breakfast outside with either a hot cup of coffee or tea!
When’s my next trip????
Ruby also had a great time on our trip!
I couldn’t have asked for a better five days in the desert!
It was so green, I have never seen so much water, and it was my birthday!
More photos to come!
Just hanging out!
I love multi-day llama pack trips because there is always time to sit back and relax! This is something I rarely do when I am home.
We love exploring all over Arizona!
There are so many desert wilderness areas, each with its unique vegetation, wildlife and geology!
I can’t wait to spend the next five days on another desert llama pack trip!

We brought Sharmaign back home from a pasture in the Verde Valley, and she was so happy to roll in the dirt!
Yesterday we took two llama girls out for some training. We practiced haltering, loading the trailer, and leading while wearing a saddle and panniers. Both girls had a successful day, but Lozen was especially easy to work with! She is 1 year 8 months old and has a great personality! Lozen came from southern Arizona, and we named her after an Apache warrior who was an ally of Geronimo.
Happy healthy Roo! Chris took Roo to the vet a week or so ago, but now she is healthy and was confirmed pregnant! Watch for the photo bombing!
First Walk! This is my first time out of the house since my knee replacement surgery last Tuesday. I am pretty excited that I made it to the end of the driveway and back with my crutches!
Birthday Llama Love! We had a great time on our llama hike today! Not only did the birthday girl enjoy hiking with Elllsworth, we ran into an unexpected guest toward the end of our hike! Stay tuned for more information.
What scent does a ponderosa pine give off? Find out by joining us on a multi-day pack trip in Northern Arizona this summer! What a great gift idea! Check out our website for availability.
Last weekend we took five llamas, two friends, and one dog on a four day llama pack trip in the Superstition Wilderness Area. I just love the desert!!!
Nothing like waking up to your hiking partner saying, “Good Morning” to you! . Thank you Tanner for three great days on a llama pack trip!
Kendrick has gained two pounds in two days, thanks to his mom! He is totally nursing on his own, so we introduced him to his half brother Chaco. They are having the best time together!
We are now booking llama picnic hikes for Memorial Weekend! Check out our website for available dates! Arizonallamas.com
All of our trips are participatory so you get to help with the cooking, setting up and tearing down camp! We’ll teach you how to become a llama wrangler for a full experience with our wooly llama friends.
Looking for a unique vacation right here in Arizona? Start the week out with a two or more days on a llama pack trip on the beautiful North Kaibab Plateau. The North Kaibab is more like Colorado than the rest of Arizona. Elevations from 7,000’ to over 9,000’ mean that you will be hiking through mixed conifer forests, aspen groves and beautiful wide open meadows. This hike is on the National Scenic Arizona Trail (AZT) and is completely flexible. We can customize an itinerary for you!
