Our castle of the month for July is Matsumoto Castle.

A National Treasure and one of the last twelve surviving tenshu (Japanese castle complexes) in Japan, Matsumoto Castle (formerly Fukashi Castle) is a traditional fortification dating back to the Sengoku period.

During the Edo period, the castle was established as the Matsumoto Domain, or the estate for the powerful feudal lord of the region, which it remained until 1868. In 1872, the Meji government, during a period of restoration, ordered the destruction of all former feudal fortifications including Matsumoto Castle. However an influential resident of Matsumoto, alongside other residents, campaigned to save the building and their efforts were rewarded when the castle was acquired by the town.

Selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Castles in 2006, Matsumoto Castle continues to stand today as a remnant of feudal Japan.
