Kitich Forest Camp offers traditional safari charm in a wilderness quite unlike any other in Africa, and delivers an experience as equally unforgettable for those discovering Africa for the first time, as it does for those lucky enough to have spent many years exploring it.

Nestled in one of the valleys – overlooking a river frequented by African painted dogs, colourful birds, leopards and elephants - are six tents.

Horns up for rhinos on World Endangered Species Day.

Black rhinos in Kenya were on the brink of extinction three decades ago, but their numbers have since quadrupled from 240 in 1984 to 966 in 2024 and Laikipia has been at the forefront of this resurgence.

THE RENDILLE WARRIOR

I took a few days off from cycling and visited some of the most remote tribes near Lake Turkana in Kenya.

The Rendille people are a nomadic pastoralist ethnic group inhabiting the arid North Eastern Province of Kenya. They are commonly known as “The Holders of the Stick of God.” Considered to be related to the Somali people, their language is similar to Somali, but due to intermarriages with the Samburu tribe, many now speak the Samburu language. They follow a traditional religion and believe in one God.

Young males undergo the rite of passage and become “warriors,” playing the role of protecting the livestock and tribe. They wear vibrant and elaborate outfits adorned with intricate beadwork, along with feathered headdresses. The use of ochre, a natural pigment, is common among the Rendille people to decorate their bodies, clothing, and hair.

Historically, Rendille warriors carry wooden clubs as part of their traditional attire and weaponry. It is used as a weapon for self-defense and protection. Carrying it also holds cultural significance, representing strength, courage, and readiness to defend the community.

The arid and harsh environment has had a significant effect on the Rendille mentality. Their cultural practices often reflect an intimate understanding of their surroundings and the ability to adapt to changing conditions.

The Njemps (also known as Ilchamus) are one of the 44 ethnic communities in Kenya, primarily residing in the Rift Valley region. I visited this community living on Ol Kokwe Island in the center of Lake Baringo.

The Njemps speak the Maa language and belong to the same linguistic group as the Maasai and Samburu. Historically, they have been pastoralists, relying on cattle herding for their livelihood, but they also engage in fishing activities in Lake Baringo. Their fishing canoes are made from ambach wood and tied together using wild leaves.

Like other Maa-speaking communities, the Njemps use leather, beads, brass, and copper in clothing and ornaments. They have a rich cultural heritage, which includes traditional dances, music, and rituals.

Visiting the Njemps living on Ol Kokwe Island required a one-hour boat ride from the shores of Lake Baringo in the dark. We reached there before sunrise. As the sun ascended and cast golden hues across the tranquil waters of Lake Baringo, I captured these portraits of Njemps people whose roots intertwined with the land and waters they called home.

I am humbled to share another remarkable conservation story from Kenya: the resurgence of eastern black rhinos from the brink of extinction. In a pivotal moment, Kenya is reclaiming its role as a haven for these creatures, establishing a vital breeding population at in Laikipia, Kenya, where they have been absent for the past half-century mainly due to poaching and long ago, trophy hunting. This first image shows the moment a rhino was resuscitated after it stopped breathing and quickly released. The arduous tasks of tracking, darting, and relocating 21 of these critically endangered giants, each weighing over a ton, posed formidable challenges, yet the teams from executed the operation with unparalleled expertise and dedication. Their efforts offer a glimmer of hope for the future of these magnificent creatures. The final image shows the skull of the last rhino poached in the 1970s resting beneath a celestial canopy, symbolizing this hopeful shift as Kenya now stands as a nation that is expanding habitat and bolstering rhino populations. With approximately 80% of the world’s remaining eastern black rhinos under its protection, Kenya is safeguarding endangered populations for future generations.

I want to sincerely thank all the partners and encourage you to follow
