⁣The first Tuscany Study course of 2019 has been completed!

An entire group of students from Nipissing University (Located in North Bay, Canada) came to Carrara to learn how to carve stone with us. They were such an ethusiastic and hardworking bunch! It was truly a pleasure to teach them.⠀

Now, it is time to prepare for the second course! @ Carrara, Italy

2014/15 Artist-in-Residence Josh Henderson uses a large angle grinder to rough-contour his sculpture before setting it up with a pointing machine. The safe use of large power tools is an effective way to remove many days of hand labor from your carving project.

There are only a few weeks left before Tuscany Study 2019 Workshop commences. Our team is very excited to return to Carrara and are ready to give all of our attendees a carving experience that they won’t soon forget! ⁣

This image is one from the archives. Zoë Suenson-Taylor is seen here creating a piece with us in 2013. She is enlarging a model, that she brought over to Italy, using a method that involves points and calipers. ⁣

The little raised mounds of mastic resin, that can be seen on her model to the left, are created so that a new carver won’t hit their final surface until they are absolutely ready to do so.

Hello! We are producing a video channel about stone sculpture. In this series, we will interview artists, produce carving tutorials, speak with art historians and so much more. Our full length videos will be between 3-15 minutes. We have lots of editing to do! Therefore, we will be uploading small teaser clips onto Sculpting Stone until we are done.
————————————————————————We had the privilege to meet up with the highly talented stone sculptor Richie Healy ( ) at his Dublin-based "D15 Studios". In this clip, he can be seen expertly carving a floral detail into a gorgeous piece of Kilkenny limestone from McKeon Stone (McKeonStone). The sonorous ring of this monumental-grade stone and the uniform color are both characteristics of this material. You can see that planning, creating precise drawings and having a razor sharp chisel are essential.
We look forward to visiting him again for a more comprehensive look into his personal studio practice as well as that of the other talented carvers at D15 Studios

The marble sculpture Mecca could have been in a much uglier place, but as it turns out, Carrara is surrounded by incredible vistas, with mountains rising steeply just a stone’s throw from the Mediterranean. With weekends free and sunlight until 9pm in June, our workshop participants use their down time to go to the beach or explore the many beautiful, local points of interest. @ Carrara, Italy

Getting back to basics in Carrara with some architectural carving. Planes and geometrical constructions are the first thing stone sculptors are taught in a traditional apprenticeship program. Few subjects are more demanding: your eye can see immediately when a line is not straight, or a plane not perfectly flat. For this reason, we encourage beginning carvers to "cut their teeth" on some basic geometric forms such as a cornice or mortar. If you can complete that exercise, you will have a foundation of solid chiseling skills which can be used to sculpt just about anything else. #мраморнаяскульптура #大理石の彫刻 #大理石雕塑

Via Martiri del Lavoro: "Road of those who died on the job," or "Work Martyrs." In Carrara, the dangerous legacy of quarrying is a perpetual specter over every step of the process required to violently extract a giant piece of three-hundred-million-year-old earth marrow by tiny humans, crane it, cut it, and truck it to the lowlands, where eventually a crumb may end up on your work table. Last year, five quarrymen died doing this. It is with this awareness that we cultivate a respectful approach for each block of marble we have the good fortune to sculpt.

Apprenticeship has changed little over the centuries...under the watchful gaze of Venus, young Nicolò Corsanini diligently wet sands the back of a statuary marble sculpture in his father's workshop. This, of course, is an upgrade from his previous job of sweeping the floor. When he has mastered these tasks, he may be entrusted with a hammer and chisel. Food for thought whenever we feel impatient about our progress in stone sculpture: it's an art form that requires—and merits—a long, rich journey.
