The walls with stories to tell…

Kowloon Walled City was a densely populated and largely ungoverned, within the boundaries of Kowloon City - Hong Kong.

By the late 1980s, the walled city contained roughly 35,000 residents within its territory of 2.6 hectares.

From the 1950s to the 1970s, it was controlled by local triads and had high rates of prostitution, gambling, and drug abuse.

In January 1987, the British colonial government announced plans to demolish the walled city. Demolition began in March 1993.

Kowloon Walled City Park opened in December 1995 and occupies the area of the former walled city.

Did you know, Guia Lighthouse, dating from 1865, was the first modern lighthouse on the Chinese coast?

It is listed as UNESCO World Heritage and comprises the Guia Chapel and Lighthouse. The Fortress, which is located on a hill in São Lázaro district, was crucial in keeping off the Dutches during the attempted invasion of 1622.
