Sri Lanka is to issue free tourist visas from 1 October to visitors from 35 countries, including the UK.

Tourists will be able to visit Sri Lanka for 30 days on a free visa under a six-month pilot programme in an effort to boost tourism.

According to Visasnews.com, Sri Lanka initially announced it would introduce a ‘visa-free policy’, however, the Cabinet of Ministers issued a statement later yesterday to confirm visas would still be required, but they would be free for 30 days during the pilot period.

Transport Minister Bandula Gunawardana said: “The aim of the government is to transform Sri Lanka into a free visa country, much like Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam to tap into the benefits of a rapidly growing tourism industry,” Reuters reports.

The move has been welcomed by Experience Travel Group, which called it a ‘game changing blueprint for Sri Lanka’s future’.

CEO Sam Clark said: “This is great news for Sri Lanka and even better news for British travellers.

“It offers travellers around the world a great chance to see all the country has to offer, and it’s a huge opportunity for British ministers to negotiate a permanent visa-free arrangement.

“Sri Lanka is not just a safe country. It is a jewel in South Asia’s crown and our government should do everything it can to help British people visit.”

Royal Caribbean International has revealed new details of its next Icon-class ship, Star of the Seas, which is due to enter service next summer.

The 5,610-passenger Star of the Seas will be the sister ship to Icon of the Seas, the biggest ship afloat, with 20 decks, which launched this year.

Star of the Seas will launch in August 2025, offering seven-night cruises from Port Canaveral, Florida.

It will feature eight neighbourhoods, including five that are only on the Icon-class ships.

They include Thrill Island, which was the first waterpark at sea when it was introduced on Icon of the Seas, with waterslides and Crown’s Edge, the part skywalk and thrill ride 154 feet above the ocean; the three-deck Chill Island, with four of the ship’s seven pools, including swim-up bar Swim & Tonic and Royal Bay, the largest pool at sea.

Surfside is the neighbourhood designed for young families; AquaDome is a ‘tranquil oasis by day and vibrant hot spot at night’ with shows in the AquaTheater; and the Hideaway is the adult-only area, with suspended infinity pool.

It will also feature the Royal Promenade with floor-to-ceiling ocean views; the Pearl, the world’s largest kinetic art sculpture; more than 15 restaurants, bars and lounges – including a new eatery, the 1930s Chicago-inspired Lincoln Park Supper Club; the open-air Central Park lined with more than 30,500 real plants plus the exclusive Suite Neighbourhood.

EU officials have confirmed that Britons travelling to Europe next summer will need to apply for a visa waiver.

The visa waiver will cost €7 for people aged 18-70. There will be no charge for children and those over 70.

It will last for three years, or until the holder’s passport expires, whichever comes first.

Passengers will apply online or via a mobile app and most applications will be approved within minutes, say officials, although they have warned it might take up to 72 hours or even up to a month for more complex cases.

As part of the application process, ‘full disclosure’ is required regarding an applicant’s background, including travel history and any criminal record.

EU Home Affairs Minister Ylva Johansson said the visa waiver, officially called the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will follow the implementation of the automated EU Entry/Exit System (EES), which she has confirmed will launch on 10 November 2024 following years of delays.

She said introduction of the ETIAS will follow six months later, meaning it should be in place by mid-May 2025.

When the EES comes into force in the autumn, travellers with non-EU passports, including those travelling on British passports, will need to register their fingerprint and have their photo taken the first time they cross the border.

The new system is expected to lead to delays on arrival at EU airports and ports as it will take border guards up to two minutes longer to process each passenger.

Princess secures flights with Jet2 for 2025
Princess Cruises has secured flights with Jet2 to provide airlift from four regional airports in the UK to the Mediterranean in 2025.

Passengers will be able to book flights via Plane Sailing, Princess’s air travel booking service, from Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, and Newcastle for cruises on Majestic Princess.

All flights include 22kg hold luggage and 10kg hand luggage allowance.

A dedicated white label website means that Princess Cruises guests will be able book Jet2 flights, access and manage their booking, pay to pre-book seating, and purchase additional luggage in advance using their cruise booking reference.

“These flight allocations with Jet2.com allow our guests to coordinate their air travel with their cruise itinerary, enhancing their holiday planning experience and offering greater flexibility and security,” said Vice President Princess Cruises UK and Europe Eithne Williamson.

“This collaboration underscores Princess Cruises’ commitment to providing exceptional service and convenience, making it easier for our guests to start their dream Mediterranean cruise from a location closer to home.

“Jet2.com is known for its award-winning customer service and extensive flight network, which aligns perfectly with Princess Cruises’ dedication to delivering a premium holiday experience.

“With limited availability on flights and Princess Cruises’ 2025 Mediterranean season in high demand, we encourage guests to secure their flight and cruise whilst they can, to ensure they don’t miss out.”

In a bid to renew and protect the coral reefs around Mauritius, Beachcomber is proud to launch a new coral restoration and preservation project at Le Morne. Together with the European Union and the NGO Reef Conservation, Beachcomber aims to achieve four objectives: establish a coral inventory, create a sanctuary for these marine organisms, develop an educational centre, and create Voluntary Marine Conservation Zones.

There will be three phases to this five-year plan. The first involves creating a comprehensive coral inventory. Phase 2 will include the creation of a coral nursery at Paradis Beachcomber to cultivate the rare corals before placing them on the natural reefs of the island. Thirdly, Beachcomber will incorporate an educational centre at Paradis Beachcomber to raise awareness.

All of us are acutely aware of the role coral reefs play in the marine ecosystem. Protecting and renewing the coral reefs around Mauritius is part of Beachcomber’s 52 commitments to sustainability. We’ll keep you updated as the project progresses.
