De wintermaanden (juni-augustus) brengen sneeuw op de bergtoppen in het hele land en heldere, frisse dagen. Op het Noordereiland kun je meer regen tegenkomen, terwijl het Zuidereiland kouder maar droger is. Temperaturen variëren van 1,5 tot 15,5 graden Celsius. Hoe zuidelijker je gaat, hoe kouder het wordt – de temperaturen zijn in Queenstown aanzienlijk lager dan in Auckland.
