Why can't we have 7-Elevens like this in Australia?!

Ah, yes, 7-Eleven – everyone’s go-to convenience store. It’s one of those businesses that successfully breached geographical borders and offer goods to anyone on-the-go. Whether it’s a quick bite or a disposable item, 7-Eleven just always seem to have the right item at the right time. Same g...

A lot of Australian's have had Sushi, and most recognise it as something that is most definately Japanese. But sushi in Japan for the most part is not what you buy at the local Tokyo Kitchen in your nearest shopping centre, it is very hard to pick up a California roll in Tokyo. But sushi can be had in a large variety and can be bought in a sit down restaurant for as little as $1 a piece, thats not to say that you can't pay a lot more though! And of course, many places offer english menus, so you know exactly what you are getting!

Check out this video for a bit of an experience in sushi restaurant in Japan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q41VBLGNayk

Shinkansen Saturday! 500 series shinkansen leaving Hiroshima station headed north. The 500 series operate exclusively in the southern part of Japan, so if you only plan on visiting Tokyo you will miss out on seeing this example of 1990s Japan.

Is it hard for an Aussie to get lost walking around in the major cities in Japan? Well, that might be dependant on where you are from! People from Sydney might feel a little more at home in Tokyo whilst people from Melbourne and the other major Australian CBDs might be a little more at home in Osaka, Nagoya, Kyoto or nearly anywhere else.

I think it is fair to say the average Australian person thinks that Japanese food is based entirely around Sushi, and I hear a lot of people say that they couldn't go to Japan because they hate Seafood! Well, thats absolutely not the case!
If you, like the average Aussie love a Chicken Schnitzel or Parma at the pub, then Japan has an equivalent meal for you. Meet the Tonkatsu, which is literally a Pork Schnitzel. Served with a salad and Rice or with a curry sauce, or countless other ways, this meal should be a stepping stone for the weary traveller scared of more obscure Japanese foods.
Absolutely best served with a large cold beer, this meal can be had for well under $15AUD!!!

When people in Australia think about Rock and Roll, for the most part they mean ACDC or belting out Khesan at the Pub after 15 schooners. But in Tokyo and especially at Yoyogi park on a Sunday Rock and Roll is all about the Rockabillies. Leather jackets, pomadour hairstyles and everything 1950s Americana with a distinct Japanese twist. And to make the trip even more worth while Yoyogi park also holds the Meiji shine which is absolutely worth the visit any day of the week.

Here is a great video featuring some of the awesome moves you can expect to see on a sunday in Yoyogi; https://youtu.be/i1Tn2FCvBPA

Miyajima is often listed as one of the places to visit when close to Hiroshima. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Miyajima is a small island located about an 40 minutes from Hiroshima by local rail and the then ferry, both of which are covered by the JR rail pass which means, that this day trip is free! There is heaps to do at Miyajima, and if you are keen on Oysters $5 AUD will net you two palm sized grilled oysters from the surrounding Oyster farms to snack on. Just don't let the local deer steal them! 😅😅

There is heaps more information for Miyajima that you can find online in videos like this: https://youtu.be/JDj0WQITs2k

Shinkansen Saturday! 'Wait, this isn't a picture of a Bullet train' I hear you say. And you would be correct, but the ride from tokyo to Nagoya, kyoto and beyond can be quite long and you might find yourself a little hungry along the way. The trains do serve smaller snacks, drinks and icecreams similar to how airlines offer snacks on a cart, but you might find yourself in the market for an Ekiben. A Station Lunchbox like this one is about $12 AUD or ¥1000 and is pretty bloody good, especially when paired with a cold can of beer 😁

For more information on Ekibens check out this video https://youtu.be/xwtlkO7_Ml4

Worried about finding your way about in Japan because of the language barrier? Can't be bothered to learn the language? Fair enough, it's pretty bloody bard. But pretty much everything is in English from stations and street signs as well as most menus and even ticket machines have an English option! And if you still manage to get lost, look for a Koban (Police Box) to ask for advice!

Free Fridays! Our day of Free things to see and do in Japan!

Higashi Honganji in Kyoto in a masssive Buddhist temple that is free to enter. Take a look at the photos to get a scale of the people against the buildings! It is also just a quick walk from Kyoto station and Kyoto tower. The structures are amazing and there is plenty of information inside to learn more about the history of this, the headquarters of Otani sect of Jyodo Shinshu Buddhism.

And due to the temples location, you are near the centre of town to ba able to explore Japan's traditional capital.

Most Aussies love a cold drink and Japan has you covered. The average Japanese beer is 5% or more and available in cans 375ml (like Australia) or 500ml or bottles similar to our longnecks. Prices? Cheaper than in Australia thanks to a wheat tax rather than an alcohol content tax! 😄😄😄
