Elefanten rufen sich gegenseitig beim Namen? Ja, wirklich!

Recent news on the elephant front has blown us away
We couldn’t wait to share it with you! Elephants have long fascinated us with their incredible memories, human-like interactions and intelligence levels that we realise we have yet to fully comprehend.
New research that was released in May 2024, (this has been picked up by news stations worldwide, including the NY times and CCN) informs us that their communication is far more developed and targeted than we ever imagined and that they may even communicate differently with specific individuals.
Mike Cadman shared the news with us and we want to share it with you.
From Mike Cadman...
Anyone watching a herd of elephants gathered at a waterhole or moving through the bush will be aware that these giant, stately animals communicate with each other all the time.
Sometimes they make physical contact, touching each other with their trunks, at other times they keep in contact by smell or sight, and often they communicate through the generation of low frequency “rumbles” that can be heard by other elephants kilometers away.
Now new research suggests that elephants could be even smarter than we think, and that the animals may call each other by “name,” using unique “rumble” calls directed at individual animals.
“They have this ability to individually call specific members of their family with a unique call,” Dr Michael Pardo, of Cornell University in the U.S. says.

Elephants produce low frequency “rumbles”, some of which are at frequencies humans are unable to hear, by forcing air from the lungs over their vocal cords creating the “rumble”. The animals …

HAPPY YOUTH DAY

Youth Day is a South African national holiday that falls on June 16. It celebrates the contribution of young people to the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. The date commemorates a children’s protest march that took place on June 16, 1976, in the Soweto townships near Johannesburg. Youth Day is also known as Soweto Day.

In 1974 the South African government issued the Afrikaans Medium Decree, an order that required black schools to teach some subjects in the Afrikaans language. (Schools were racially segregated under apartheid.) However, most black students and teachers did not speak Afrikaans—only English. Also, many black South Africans thought of Afrikaans as the language of their oppressors.

By 1976, pupils were very frustrated about the situation. At a meeting in the Orlando township in Soweto they decided to hold a protest march. Thousands of children began to march to a stadium for a rally. When the protest began to turn violent, the police tried to stop it by shooting at the students. Twelve-year-old Hector Pieterson was among those shot. A photograph of the wounded child, who later died, was printed in newspapers throughout the world and became a symbol of the mass movement against apartheid that is now known as the Soweto Uprising.

The violence lasted for days and spread to more than 80 other cities and towns. The events helped bring the attention of the world to the efforts to end apartheid in South Africa. When apartheid finally came to an end in the early 1990s, the new government established Youth Day as one of the country’s official holidays.

The oldest lighthouse in South Africa, Green Point Lighthouse in Cape Town, was commissioned at sunset on the 12th of April 1824, meaning that this grand old lady turns 200 years old on this day. It's a momentous occasion for lighthouses in general, but also in the history of South Africa. May she continue to shine for many more years to come!

International Cheetah Day - 04 December

International Cheetah Day, observed annually on December 4, serves as a global tribute to these remarkable big cats, and raises awareness of their pressing conservation needs. Due to the tragic loss of 90% of the world’s cheetahs, only an estimated 6000 – 7000 adult cheetah are still alive in the wild today, with fewer than 2000 in South Africa.

Cheetahs are one of the key conservation priorities for Amakhala Game Reserve, and in celebrating International Cheetah Day, Amakhala Game Reserve highlights the importance of preserving and protecting these magnificent creatures, contributing to broader international efforts in ensuring the survival and well-being of cheetah populations worldwide.

The Amakhala Game Reserve team is proud to be involved in the Cheetah Metapopulation Project spearheaded by the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), to relocate wild cheetahs together to safer havens while keeping genetic integrity.

Amakhala Game Reserve also proudly shares the success of our own four cheetah cubs - three females and one male – who are now approximately 8 months old, and thriving! These spirited cubs are not only growing in size but are also gaining confidence daily, displaying an increasing curiosity about hunting.
