Update on Lake Janet, Mt Grey, Sept 2022:-

Over the years, some members of the Club have been involved in maintaining the Lake Janet Track on Mt. Grey. In spring of 2021, an area beside the Lake was logged. I approached Rayonier, asking for us to be involved with the reinstatement of the track and surrounding area, especially after the mess left on the Summit Track, Mt. Thomas. At the end of November, we joined Rayonier and DOC at Lake Janet to dis-cuss their proposals.

Following logging completion, Rayonier, with a little digger had reinstated the track. This has packed down nicely since, though a few tree roots need cutting away. They also put in a zig-zag track at our re-quest, just above the logged area to avoid the short loose gravely climb.

Recent events have completed many of these projects.
Both Rayonier and I were getting no response from DOC re the signage, so Rayonier have put in a new sign at Lake Janet. (see photo). We were asked for feedback on the draft, and many of our suggestions have been instigated. We also walked the tracks to check the times, realising that this is a good family track.
At the end of this tramp, we also completed the L. Janet Loop. Unfortunately, and to our disgust, at the fallen tree, someone had sat here and s**t in the middle of the track. Toilet paper was everywhere. E-mails with photos attached, were sent to DOC and Rayonier. DOC responded saying they would clean up the mess, but no mention of putting the toilet back in. Another e-mail sent, and lo and behold, the toilet is now functional.

Then at the end of August, I was invited by Rayonier to join them and Broomfield School, in a planting day at L. Janet. Within an hour or so, the children and a few adults (including school staff, parents, and office and field staff from Rayonier) had all the natives planted on the logged slope opposite L. Janet. This was followed by a walk around the Lake and a sausage sizzle.

Our association with Rayonier over this project has been much appreciated. As very regular users of this track especially, and those of our other local mountains that are in forestry, I would wish for this to contin-ue. Many thanks Rayonier!
