Yesterday we took a drive out to Koombooloomba Dam near Ravenshoe. This is the first place we took Hamish camping when he was 3 weeks old!!! That was 10&1/2 years ago 😱😱
Jay and the kids are looking for somewhere to camp during the holidays. It’s hard atm as Jay and I cover a 7 day roster which means we don’t have days off together and even having an afternoon drive as a family is quite a treat!
The dam was a lot fuller than we remembered it being all those years ago. It’s also a NP camping system where you pay for and reserve a site if you want to be near the loos. Otherwise you just pay your money and find a bush camp near the water’s edge (much nicer!).
The road in is not caravan friendly, being narrow and winding and being a NP, not pet friendly either.
Beautiful location though and a gorgeous place to go for a kayak if you have one, to go for a swim or to drop in a line 😎

Today we went for a drive to diss our a few camp spots in Woonooroonan national park up in FNQ. The kids are waiting on their camp stretcher tents to arrive so we can do some proper camping rather than taking the off-road hotel with us.
I’ve got a big double swag I never get to use but now we have got the cruiser setup for more remote camping allowing us to strap the swag on the roof.
Kids are super excited so we have been off exploring.
Henrietta camp on the Palmerston hwy is right off the main road and camps are tiny and totally shaded from any sun at all. It felt a bit claustrophobic to be honest.
The next camp up the road was a 12km climb up the mountainside (not suitable for towing at all 😳) the climb wasn’t too bad but the pudding rain started to make it pretty sloppy.
It is called South Johnstone park and it’s no where near it’s marked point on wiki camps. It was a lovely drive but the camp spot again was tiny and you couldn’t camp out of the car either as bollards blocked entry to the camp area. Kids where not impressed but it was a nice looking spot.
The rivers there where pristine but very cold , a great bonus for summer camping.
The whole area is constantly shrouded in mist and light rain making everything feel damp.
Next week we will head to another spot called Koombaloomba dam. It used to be a great spot but has now turned into a paying campspot but it’s worth the small fee

One of the awesome things about travelling slowly and working in an area for a while is the opportunity to experience more of what a region has to offer!! We have a good friend visiting so have taken a trip in to Atherton to pick our own strawberries at Shaylee Strawberry Farm - Atherton Tablelands.

I came across this and thought it was too good not to share...the author is a lady called Caitriona Loughrey

Barely the day started and... it's already six in the evening.
Barely arrived on Monday and it's already Friday... and the month is already over... and the year is almost over... and already 40, 50 or 60 years of our lives have passed... and we realize that we lost our parents, friends.
and we realize it's too late to go back...
So... Let's try, despite everything, to enjoy the remaining time...
Let's keep looking for activities that we like...
Let's put some color in our grey...
Let's smile at the little things in life that put balm in our hearts.
And despite everything, we must continue to enjoy with serenity this time we have left. Let's try to eliminate the afters...
I'm doing it after...
I'll say after...
I'll think about it after...
We leave everything for later like ′′ after ′′ is ours.
Because what we don't understand is that:
Afterwards, the coffee gets cold...
afterwards, priorities change...
Afterwards, the charm is broken...
afterwards, health passes...
Afterwards, the kids grow up...
Afterwards parents get old...
Afterwards, promises are forgotten...
afterwards, the day becomes the night...
afterwards life ends...
And then it's often too late....
So... Let's leave nothing for later...
Because still waiting see you later, we can lose the best moments,
the best experiences,
best friends,
the best family...
The day is today... The moment is now...

We are no longer at the age where we can afford to postpone what needs to be done right away.
So let's see if you have time to read this message and then share it.
Or maybe you'll leave it for... ′′ later "...
And you'll never share it....

Today we took a drive to find some camping spots around where we are working in FNQ. The caravan can be a hindrance sometimes when getting off the beaten track and going proper bush so we have an alternative camping setup. The kids are waiting on their oztrail camp stretcher bunkers to arrive and I’ve got my big Darche double swag. The cruiser is setup for camping without the caravan hosting 3batteries our 60ltr fridge, solar panels and drifta rapidwing awning.
Now we can just go bush without the luxury , proper camping.
Kids are a bit excited so we have been looking for local free camps.
This is in Irvinebank which is smack bang in the middle of the boonies.
Dirt road in and out with some steep climbs so you need to be committed to a good drive.
Kids thought it was perfect and keen to explore the old heritage town

Can’t wait

We had planned on Townsville being our last stop before heading back to the farm but we stopped to see friends staying at Mareeba bush camps.
So glad we did it’s an awesome spot.
Up in the hills looking out over the tablelands.
They do have some powered/water sites if you plan to stay a while otherwise it’s $10 for a night (self contained vehicles only ) you need a toilet and shower minimum.
This was a great pic of sunset right next to our van.

Often we don’t travel with water due to the weight and for safety as a half full tank sloshing around can sometimes cause a bit of instability when driving.
We do always travel with a jerry can of drinking water and we pulled up for an overnight stop with only the 20ltr of water in the jerry.
So with my little home made pump box I just plug it onto the Anderson plug on the van and plumb it into the van and now I have 20ltr of water to do the washing up, brushing teeth, flush the toilet and so on.
Tomorrow we are only a short drive from home so should do us just fine 😁

A nice overnight spot at Toomulla Beach north of Townsville. We’ve stayed in a couple of van parks this time and we always enjoy being back in gems like this 👌
Coral and shells for the kids to find, playground, toilets, drinking water and dog friendly ✅

Every time we find a roller skate arena it’s a must do. Hamish loves to do a thorough check of the barriers and Matilda reckons she is a professional while Maeryn finds the boots too heavy but loving it all the same.
Mum is just looks like a flailing mower cutting down kids as she goes.

Dad ? Well I’m just far too far ahead professionally as a skater to have a go , 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Today we went out to explore where we have bought our land. It was a great day seeing the beautiful beaches and the ocean again. Rainbow 🌈 beach, tin can bay it’s all so Hawaii ( says Matilda)
I think we are going to really like living here 😁

We arrived onto our blocks of land we purchased. We had bought one last year and we bought next four block a month ago so we had to come take a look and see where we are going to build our big shed home 😁
It’s a bit bigger than I thought so we have a bit of choice.
We talked with the shed home people today and after showing us a few ideas and explaining how it works we think we may have found Our ideal design
Now waiting on the design plan so we can start pe***ng out there area.
We had the tree removal guy Josh from Quality Earthworks & Tree Removal come take a look at the block to find out how to clear they are a for the house and now have a pretty good idea of the next step.
Should have a good amount of wood by the end of it.
8 years travelling and working has got us to this point even after changing towing and caravan setups three times. Next big chapter coming up. 😁

It’s been a while since we have been away due to this virus 🦠 and after a pack up and a decent drive it was time to familiarise ourselves with how does the awning pull out? Why isn’t the water working? How do I turn the gas on ?
First night we where knackered after some mechanics at the side of the road.
Dinner was a quick bangers and mash and after being away from the camp setup for a while it was great to stick the Ziggy BBQ back onto the BBQARM and just cook rather than buggering around with tables and stuff. It really is a handy bit of kit.
It’s been hanging off the van now for over 12 months and used a lot but still looks in brand new condition.
It’s a bit of a talking point at the caravan parks with the oldies as it’s way easier and out the way than old bobs setup and marge loves how it’s not stinking out the undercover area from Bobs crap cooking. 😳🤣
Sometimes you can teach the oldies at least a new gadget rather than a trick.
It’s also endlessly entertaining when the old boys all stand at the front of their van to watch the young guy with the kids reverse 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 nothing to see here legends my reversing skills are up there with the best of them.

In true Wandering jocks style. We head off for our first camping trip after the virus and 30km in the land cruiser has a hiss fit.
The handbrake springs went ping and heated up the drum so I had to pull it apart at side of the road and fix. After a bit of guidance from a mate and we are going again minus a handbrake. Since it’s a land cruiser it didn’t really work anyway and was there purely to p**s me off on my first day of holiday.
Now hopefully to get to our first camp spot 😁👍

Crazy to think that eight years ago today we made the biggest leap of faith and hit the road!! Two kids 2yo and under, a big dog, a motorbike, soft floor camper and and old 4WD, $5000 in savings (no debt either) and no freaking idea what we were doing!!!

We’ve had some huge hurdles, but being the happiest we’ve ever been now shows how worth it those challenges have been!!

It’s a bit like that 😳

Another resource to help with schooling. Any people planning on roadschooling/homeschooling in the future could start saving PDFs in case links don’t work after this crisis is over. We have an Education folder on the laptop with sub folders for subjects and then year levels.

https://education.qld.gov.au/curriculum/learning-at-home

Curriculum resources for English and Mathematics are available for students to complete at their own pace. Students in Prep to Year 3 may require support to read and understand instructions.

We’ve been eclectic homeschoolers for a while...our eldest is now 10. As well as buying Australian Curriculum aligned workbooks from places like newsagencies, BigW, Kmart, etc. we also use a variety of mostly free apps and websites (some have basic level for free and then can upgrade if you wish). Some of our favourites:
Khan Academy

Duolingo
Yousician
Brave Writer
Article-A-Day
Mystery Science
BorrowBox
ReadingEggs.com (not free but a great program IMO)
Australia / New Zealand

ECE (experiments for young children)
Pay Teachers

As well as these, many science and museum institutes have great educational resources as well as state-based Parks and Wildlife sites. If all else fails, google or search YouTube as well 😉

Our key has always been to make reading a priority...kids learn a lot when they can read independently.

Audible also has kids books for free during this crisis.

Reading Eggs is the online reading program that helps children learn to read. Hundreds of online reading lessons, phonics games and books for ages 2–13. Start your free trial!

With all the corona virus meltdown people are having I’d say it’s the travellers who may be best setup to ride out the shenanigans 😳.
With our solar powered home on wheels we can go out bush till the food runs out, we can pump and filter our own water, we can survive a month with food we can carry given we cryovac and cook everything from scratch. We have homeschooled and caught our diner at times, the kids are ready , we are ready ......... are you 😉

Don’t worry you can use vegan 🌱 bog roll out bush too. Just grab a vegans lunch menu and use a leaf 🍃😁

It’s great to learn new skills and better when it’s not cooking 🥘

As much as lil likes to cook she was a bit over it all and wanted to try something new. Now working on the mango farm she is learning everything from herbicide spraying to irrigation. She is really happy to be given the opportunity to do machinery work and she is doing an excellent job.

Go Lilly Pilly😘

There are a range of resources available if you are talking to your child about bushfires, preparation, response and recovery.

They could be part of your home education program for learning areas like sciences or humanities and social sciences.
