Plaza Calafia is a beautifully landscaped and well-established condominium complex within the gated and guarded (24/7) neighborhood of Cabo Bello. It is located some four miles from Cabo San Lucas along the famous Cabo Corridor. This neighborhood is an extensive and well maintained community of upscale homes, condos, flanked by resorts and restaurants. Our condo #169 is just 200 yards from the a private beach. MISIONES PRIVATE BEACH: Our crescent-shaped beach is about 200 yards long with eight sun shade palapas. The water is warm and usually calm, safe for swimming, snorkeling or kayaking. You can see the famous Land’s End Arch from the rocky tide pools at low tide. It’s a quiet place with no vendors, great for relaxing and daydreaming. Beer and cocktails are available from nearby resort restaurants, or bring your own. THE GROUNDS: Plaza Calafia has two beautiful 55+ ft. swimming pools– one for families and one for adults. There is a small whirlpool bath at the family pool and a fountain in the adult pool. Both pool areas have BBQs and dining in the shade or sun. There are tennis courts for the active. The mature vegetation within the grounds of Plaza Calafia ranges from the expected desert shrubs and cactus to the unexpectedly lush and tropical. There are fruit trees, flowering shrubs–bougainvillea, and lots of coconut and other palms. Scattered about are big desert boulders. There are numerous types of butterflies and birds. It is quietly serene with bird song and breezes. ALL OF THE THINGS TO SEE AND DO:
WALKABOUT: You can walk to the beach or the highway through the cobbled residential streets. The shortest and most popular walk is 1/4 mile to the beach and back. The hillside amble in the Cabo Bello neighborhood has significant though not overwhelming gradient. On the way down to the beach stop at the Sierra Del Mar Resort restaurant for coffee or breakfast with great sunrise views and the Arch at Land’s End. Mention you’re from Plaza Calafia and get a 15% discount on week days and 10% on weekends. Within easy walking distance from our Condo #169 are many nice places to visit. You can also drive if you like, but it’s less direct and longer. The shorter walks and distances from Condo are:
Misiones Resort and private beach – 200 yards
Sierra Del Mar Resort and Restaurant – 150 yards
Highway 1 and buses – almost 1/2 mile
Mona Lisa Sunset Restaurant, and Wine Bar (Pizza) and the most stunning sunset views of Medano Bay, Cabo, and Lands End – 1/4 mile. Enter through gate at beach and up the stairs into the Los Misiones condo development next door. Please be respectful on your way through the resort to the restaurant. Beach walk to Medano Bay and the excitement of Cabo is 3+ miles. Or you can walk along Highway 1. SHOPPING: Across the highway is Home Depot and Vinoteca – the largest wine shop in Cabo. Costco is about a mile west down Hwy 1, with WalMart and Sam’s Club just beyond. Around the corner from us on Highway 1, you’ll find a modern hospital and a small convenience store. The bustling town of Cabo, the marina, restaurants and night clubs are four miles away. More about Cabo and Baja on the following pages. A short 4 miles takes you to the many attractions of Medano Bay Beach. The Office is a popular hang-out, though we especially enjoy Tabasco’s beach bar for best prices, margaritas, and tapas. Experience the friendly staff and local feeling, and Tabasco’s is roped off from vendors. Vendors are everywhere on the beach, selling everything from garments to gum to massages, including water taxi rides over to Lover’s beach on Land’s End. $5 one way per person is reasonable fare for this enjoyment. Lover’s Beach and Divorce Beach: Take the water taxis or kayak over to Land’s End. Lover’s Beach is on the Sea of Cortez, and Divorce Beach is on the Pacific. Enjoy the amazing geology, rock formations, caves, and the famous Arch. Be cautious, as the Pacific side has dangerous water currents and powerful sneaker waves. Swim or snorkel on Lover’s beach only. If you check the tidal charts CAREFULLY, you can plan to WALK through the Arch from one beach to the other! The Cabo Marina: You’re encouraged to take the sunset dining and dancing cruise offering tasty food and unlimited drinks on out to the arch and up the pacific side. It is well worth every penny of the $50-$70 /person price especially if the Cabo sunset is ablaze. Fishing boats can be chartered from here for big game fishing. Costs may be steep. Restaurants and Night Clubs: A favorite authentic restaurant across from Puerto Paraiso (the spacious multilevel Mall at the marina) is Los Ajos (“Garlics”) offering tasty authentic Mexican reasonably priced. Tell Francisco we sent you! Great for breakfast, and people-watching out the big open windows. Night Clubs: So many to choose from, but we like Cabo Wabo for rock and roll music, however it’s not cheap, and live music doesn’t start till 10 p.m. which is late for us! But it’s an institution and offers the best acoustic quality around. Diamonte Golf Resort — distance 10 miles. (Davis Love) and Tiger’s new place with the world’s largest swimming pool, completion date late 2014. Pescadero — about 40 miles to this quaint fishing village. Good surfing. Todos Santos — about 50 miles. Charming tourist town, lots of art and American ex pats. Here you’ll find the original Hotel California so classically memorialized in the song by The Eagles. It has a large gift store and is still in operation. La Paz — distance about 100 miles. Capital of Baja and historic colonial city, hosting lots of good shopping, art and museums, including the historic pearl industry. Swim with the whale sharks here if so inclined. You can catch a ferry to Mazatlan and Mexican mainland docks from here. To return to the Condo take Highway 1 South about 100 miles. Notable Beaches: It’s recommended that you head out to the beaches earlier in the day to snag a sun-shade palapa. Take plenty of water and comfortable walking shoes as the sand can be course in some areas. Bahia Santa Maria. (Bahia means bay) Distance is 4 miles to this beautiful little protected cove which has great snorkeling and lots of colorful fish. Watch for whales in season on the way up the coast. Bahia Chileno – distance 6 miles. This is a popular spot for the locals. This beautiful bay is perfect for just floating about, but has great snorkeling in shallow water (about 10′ or less) with lots of cool rocks that form great tide pools at low tide. We have seen some big schools of fish in both these bays. Along Hwy 1 traveling east to Zipper’s, you’ll pass numerous golf courses designed by the likes of Jack Nicklaus (Palmilla) and others. Note that golf is not cheap in the Cabo area. It can run up to $200+ unless you do a timeshare presentation. Have fun with that… And just before entering San Jose del Cabo, there’s a Zipline for the adventurous! Zipper’s Restaurant and surf spot — distance 14 miles, located on the western side of San Jose del Cabo. The water’s edge is rocky and not so inviting for swimmers, as it’s primarily a surf-spot. But the popular ocean front restaurant has casual Ameri-Mex atmosphere, good food priced moderate to high, and is famous for its burgers. Live music twice weekly in winter and maybe more in summer. San Jose del Cabo – distance 16 miles. San Jose is more colonial and is low-key in comparison to Cabo San Lucas. Here you’ll find its shore-lined Hoteleria offering several all-inclusive hotel stays. There’s plenty of history, shopping, dining, and art, (famous for glass-blown art). You can probably charter fishing boats out from the new Marina for a better rate than in Cabo San Lucas. The international airport (where you probably arrived) is about 8 miles out of town and can be reached by a toll road as well as Highway 1. Experience “old baja”! Get an early start for this adventurous journey that begins at Buzzard’s Restaurant — distance 20 miles. This delightful bar and restaurant has a tropical feel. There’s no ocean view but it’s a fun and funky fun place to start your old baja style road trip. This is the start of the East Cape dirt/gravel road which is subject to rutting and erosion. It may or may not require a 4 wheel drive. Check with the locals, but a jeep is best suited to it unstable nature. Check with your car rental agency about policies before considering traveling these roads. The government has begun paving this section, but only time will tell when it will be completed. Zacatitos — Distance 25 miles. This small but growing little town has numerous lots for sale, and as the road goes up so will the prices. For now this the start of what many call “old baja” — how it used to be pre 1975 when they completed baja’s trans-peninsular highway. This is scenic country with the water in usually in view. Again watch for whales. Camping can be done on almost any beach. Shipwrecks is famous surf spot along the way, with wrecks and palapas as well as camping. Crossroads — distance about 35 miles. This spot is where another highway intersects through the mountains (also dirt/gravel and unpredictable road conditions) from Hwy 1. There’s a restaurant and surf spot. Los Frailes — distance 50 miles to this beautiful little bay beach with point break and camping. Cabo Pulmo! — distance about 55 miles — is the reason we took you down this dirt highway! It is a very quaint little village and national marine park. There’s great hiking to beautiful reclusive marine-replete areas. It’s a great place to hang-out, old school style, with the best living coral reefs close to shore in the Sea of Cortez. Abundant marine life, and baby turtles hatch here but don’t touch them even if they head inland, for they are imprinting this exact spot and will soon turn towards the sea. However you may rescue them from marauding sea gulls. Take only pictures from this national park. Now it’s time to head to Los Barriles – distance 75 miles or so. Wind-surfing and fishing, golf and a growing tourism industry are shaping this place,, expecting La Riveria to be the next Cabo. Here is where you rejoin Hwy 1 and head back down to Cabo San Lucas. You can also reverse the trip just described and see it again from the east to west point of view. That’s what we’d would do, or lay over for a day or two in Cabo Pulmo. It’s a long day if you choose driving both ways, but it’s totally worth it. Be sure to arrive home before dark. And remember, after leaving the main highway to approach the Cabo Bello entrance, drive cautiously and watch for vados (dips) and topes (speed bumps). Back at the condo and a brief walk to the west is Mona Lisa Sunset, the luxurious restaurant on the point facing Cabo. At the highest viewpoint upstairs is the casual wine bar, serving tapas and pizza with the finest sunset views of Cabo’s Land’s End and the arch. Mona Lisa is THE destination for sunset and romance. A short walk to the east is the Lawrence Welk resort for beautiful morning sunrises, breakfast, and infinity pools. Residents of Plaza Calafia get a 10% discount on the weekend and a 15% discount week days. Water from the tap is generally very pure, although we offer purified filtered water. Water is either piped directly from the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains or spring fed groundwater. Bottled water is still the norm, but in Cabo it is unnecessary to avoid ice cubes or salads. Service will be provided at the end of your stay. If you desire additional maid service, you can make arrangements with Miguel in the Plaza Calafia Office for additional cost. Our condo has a washer/dryer for your convenience. It’s recommended that you don’t drive at night especially out in the country. Four-wheel drive comes in very handy especially for exploring the East Cape north to Cabo Pulmo. It’s a great place for fish and whales and is mindful of old baja before the boom. Or take the paved highway north to La Paz, the cultural center and capital, about 100 miles away. For bigger surf, head north to Toto Santos on the Pacific side, paved all the way, and see the original Hotel California! (See ATTRACTIONS on the website for road trip details.) We’ve found a leisure home at Tabasco on Playa Medano, the main beach in Cabo, for two-for-one margaritas (the best), tasty food, reasonable prices, friendly waiters, and shade. Across from the Paradiso Mall on the main drag is Ajos, a small restaurant serving yummy breakfast for about $4. Tell Francisco we sent you!
