The Kandy Esala Perahera is a grand Buddhist festival in Sri Lanka, celebrated annually in July or August over ten days. It honors the Sacred Tooth Relic of Buddha and features vibrant processions with traditional dancers, drummers, jugglers, and lavishly adorned elephants. The festival includes five main processions representing different deities, culminating in the grand Randoli Perahera. Its origins date back to the 3rd century BC, combining Buddhist and Hindu elements, and it serves to beseech blessings for rain and prosperity.

Stilt fishing Sri Lanka 🇱🇰🐟

Stilt fishing is a traditional fishing method practiced by local fishermen in Sri Lanka, particularly along the southern coast.

The practice involves fishermen balancing on a single pole with a crossbar planted in the shallow waters near the shore, from which they cast their fishing lines. This unique method dates back around 70 years, when food scarcity and overcrowded fishing spots led resourceful fishermen to adapt this technique.

However, the tradition has faced challenges in recent years. The 2004 tsunami significantly altered the Sri Lankan coastline, reducing access to fish using this method. Many original stilt fishermen were forced to relocate inland, and the practice has become more of a tourist attraction than a functional fishing technique.

Oecophylla smaragdina (common names include Asian weaver ant, weaver ant, green ant, green tree ant, semut rangrang, semut kerangga, and orange gaster) is a species of arboreal ant found in tropical Asia and Australia. These ants form colonies with multiple nests in trees, each nest being made of leaves stitched together using the silk produced by the ant larvae: hence the name 'oecophylla' [Greek for 'leaf-house'].
