“Roman Hanayas” are suspension bridges topped with a water network or covered streets, extending over arches and columns constructed of solid rocks extending over a length of 132 kilometers to transport fresh water from Zaghouan, northeastern Tunisia, to Carthage in northwestern Tunisia.

The Hanaya was built by order of the Roman Emperor Adrian in the early second century AD, specifically in the period between 117 and 138 AD, after he admired the freshness of Zaghouan’s water. He then ordered the water to be brought from Zaghouan to the city of Carthage, which was the center of government at that time. She suffered from drought for 5 years.
