Balinese cusinine: nasi-campur-bali
A favourite meal of many Indonesia is Nasi Campur. It literally means mixed rice – a plate of rice with an assortment of vegetarian dishes and if you’re lucky, one or two pieces of meat. A meal such as the one above can be had for about a dollar. Maybe a little more when you start to pile on meat.

Balinese cusinine:
Gado gado is popular in tourist restaurants around Bali, but it is also a genuine Indonesian dish. It’s simply a bunch of vegetables mixed in a peanut sauce with a bit of soy. Something like this costs around the 50c mark at a local food stall, but isn’t enough food to satisfy fat Western appetites — so buy two.

This is gorengan. The word “goreng” means “fried”. And gorengan is simply an extension of that with a very general meaning of “fried stuff”. Most of these bite-sized morsels contain potato-like substances and are served mostly cold.

Balinese cusinine:
Babi guling or suckling-pig is a favourite meal at ceremonies in Bali. A whole pig such as this one will set back a village about $150, but will be shared between as many as 20 families. The pig is roasted with a bumbu (mixed spice paste) and then served in a variety different ways. Sometimes foreigners refer to babi guling as roast suckling pig, but Balinese more often than not use bigger pigs than those that are still suckling — there’s more meat on a big pig.

The best Of Bali
Go overland
By far the best way to appreciate the diversity of Bali is to go on an overland safari. Trips can be tailored to specific timescales and interests including: rice paddy walks, volcanoes, crater lakes, jungle trekking, mountain retreats, coffee plantations, local traditions, temples, waterfalls, coral reefs and WWII wrecks. Our favourites are: a stop over in the sleepy village of Pemuteran where you can plant your own baby coral and visit nearby Menjangan Island to dive, snorkel, see resident deer if your lucky and enjoy views of Java; a trip up the east coast for rice paddy views, a visit to Taman Tirtagangga Natural Pools, and a stop-over in the laid-back village of Amed to see traditional salt makers, snorkel at the newly-sunk Mermaid reef restoration sculpture, or try your hand at free diving. Ask locally for recommended drivers and guides.

A trip to Bali isn’t complete without a visit to Ubud, the cultural and spiritual centre of Bali. Escape the crowds of tourists at Monkey Forest and do something different. Hop on a bike with Bali Eco Cycling and get into the heart of the surrounding countryside and villages. Take a walk and learn about traditional Bali herbs and healing. Pura Tanah Lot
Desolate beaches and revered temples
Pura Tanah Lot is one of the most sacred temples in Bali, which inevitably means it’s rather commercialised and busy. However, it’s still certainly worth a visit. So rather than pass it by, hire a driver and combine seeing the temple with a trip north up the coast where you can cruise through lush green rice fields and find desolate sparkling black sand beaches. It’s such a treat to get a beach to yourself in Bali. Visit the temple in the day so you can enjoy it at its quietest. However, if you really want to go at sunset, escape the crowds and head left up the hill to one of the local cliff top bars.

Nusa Penida
Majestic mantas and spectacular coastlines
Love diving or snorkelling? Then jump on a boat and head out to the spectacular southern Nusa Penida coast. From April to October you may encounter magnificent manta rays. Many dive operators in Sanur offer day trips to Nusa Penida to include two dives, or snorkels and a spot of lunch on nearby deserted white sand beaches. As with any water sports activities, do your research and check the credentials of the company before booking.

El Kabron on Bali’s Bukit
Cliff top club with ocean views and sunsets
Located on a cliff top on the west side of the Bukit (a peninsula at the southern end of the island), this beach club and restaurant is one of my favourite places to spend an afternoon. El Kabron not only boasts some of the best ocean views and sunsets in Bali, but it also has a pool overlooking the ocean. It’s a great place to enjoy a sundowner or a glass of wine or two. The Spanish chef and local Indonesian team cook up a range of traditional Spanish dishes. I particularly love the squid ink seafood paella, and chocolate ganache truffles to round off a meal. The club can be a little difficult to find, which makes it even more special, just get on the road to Bingin then you can pick up the signs from there.
