The city of Pondicherry (Puducherry - ‘New Village’ in Tamil) is based on the French grid pattern and features perpendicular streets. The town is divided into two sections: the French Quarter (Ville Blanche or ‘White town’) and the Indian quarter (Ville Noire or ‘Black Town’).

The city is also prominently known for its yoga and meditation culture for which various festivals and events have been hosted.

Auroville had its genesis in a meeting between the two great minds in March 1914 — a time when Sri Aurobindo had sought refuge in the then-French dominion of Pondicherry to escape arrest by the British.

After he passed away in 1950, it was the Mother who took on the task of bringing his idea of a “universal town” to fruition. Her guiding principles were Sri Aurobindo’s ideal of human unity, his emphasis on cultural collaboration and his vision of India as a spiritual leader of the world.

Interestingly, she was over 90 when she started work with architect Roger Anger to chalk out a blueprint for a city of 50,000 people!

An enchanting trip to Auroville!

Auroville is an experimental city located in South India, close to Pondicherry.

During its inauguration in 1968, representatives of 124 countries and 23 Indian states placed a handful of earth from their homelands into a lotus-shaped urn at the center of the township in a symbolic gesture of human unity.

Auroville adheres to the larger universal ideal of utopia – non ownership of land, abolition of the power of money, centralized dining hall, rotational community work to avoid boredom, unending education etc, yet there are certain intricacies that are unique to this intentional community.

At Promenade Beach, the statue of Mahatma Gandhi - Father of the Nation, is one of the main landmarks in the territory of Pondicherry. The statue was built by a popular sculptor, Roy Choudhary. Apart from the statue itself, the main highlight of this popular tourist site in Pondicherry is the eight beautiful carved pillars that surround the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. It was Gingee Fort, which is around 68 km from Pondicherry, from where these monolithic granite pillars were brought and were erected in the year 1866.

A visit to The Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL), which operates the world’s first fully solar-powered airport, revealed one of the biggest floating solar power plants in Kerala. The total installed capacity of the airport has increased to 40 MWp, helping it produce around 1.6 lakh units of power a day, against its daily consumption of nearly 1.3 lakh units. The initiative will assist the airport in powering its activities using green energy.

Our crew was excited to learn more about India’s initiatives towards developing a more sustainable economy!

Standing out in a field of green are more than 46,000 solar panels tapping the power of the bright sunlight and converting it into energy.
Located in the southern state of Kerala, Cochin is the first airport in the world to run completely on solar power.
The airport started with a small pilot project by installing a solar energy plant with 400 panels on its rooftop in 2013. When that experiment succeeded, it decided to go all the way.

We visited the iconic solar airport in Cochin to learn more about its inception and functionalities. What a great way to learn about innovation in India! 🙌🏻

Skippi Ice Pops is India’s First Ice Pop Brand.
Skippi, launched in April 2021 and quickly gained traction.

While ice pops are one of the most popular desserts in the Indian subcontinent, with the ice cream market in the country reaching over Rs 14,000 crore in 2020, the industry is largely unorganised and hardly has any formal players.

The founders wanted to tap into the untapped potential of the industry and make the popsicles tasty but also manufactured with high-quality ingredients while conforming to strict quality standards. A deliciously healthy treat, for every occasion!
