Since Fruitas acquired in 2022, this Chinatown MNL favorite has started to branch out beyond its Binondo roots.

Before the acquisition, Ling Nam had one branch in Binondo, on T. Alonzo Street, and a second location in Lucky Chinatown Mall, which was later closed.

Now under Fruitas, Ling Nam is expanding across the country, with 34 branches nationwide as of recently, including a newly reopened spot at .

Beyond its signature noodles and siopao, its menu has also grown to include a wider variety of beloved Chinese dishes. They now have rice meals, Chinese fried chicken, more dimsum choices and even desserts.

As Ling Nam continues to grow, here’s hoping that the new owner will protect its legacy.

On this National Dessert Day, let’s put the spotlight on masachi, an underrated, overlooked dessert in Chinatown MNL. While it’s similar to buchi or mochi, this soft, chewy treat is unique in its own way.

Made from glutinous rice flour and often filled with peanut or toasted sesame seeds, masachi can be either coated or left plain, sometimes dusted with crushed peanut.

Masachi is typically made to order and not always available, often priced higher than its sticky dessert counterparts, but it’s worth the wait and every bite.

You can find this simple yet irresistible treat at UNO Restaurant, Cosmos Food Gallery, and Golden Fortune Restaurant — only in Chinatown MNL!

Ling Nam’s new branch at Lucky Chinatown Mall marks a return to a location where it previously operated until its closure in 2019. This is the first time Ling Nam has opened a new location in Binondo since Fruitas Holdings Inc. acquired it in 2022.

Here’s a throwback photo of the old Lucky Chinatown branch.

11 PEOPLE CONFIRMED DEAD IN BINONDO FIRE

Eleven people perished in a fire that broke out in a five-storey residential-commercial building in Binondo, Manila Friday morning, several reports say.

The fire was put out by fire responders three hours after they were alerted around 7:30 a.m. However, there are still no reports as to what caused the fire.

The ultimate cool-down companion is now a street sensation on Ongpin Street. While not exactly new — Vege Select has been offering this halo-halo for years — they’ve now introduced this in a cool new tub. 🍧

The regular size costs P80, while the large (Promax) is priced at P150.

While it may have undergone recent renovations, one thing remains constant at this Tropical Hut: great food. Despite the changes, their menu continues to feature all the classics you’ve come to love, from their signature burgers and rice meals to the flavorful palabok and comforting spaghetti. And let’s not forget their irresistible halo-halo. 🍧
