The ultimate cool-down companion is now a street sensation on Ongpin Street. While not exactly new — Vege Select has been offering this halo-halo for years — they’ve now introduced this in a cool new tub. 🍧

The regular size costs P80, while the large (Promax) is priced at P150.

While it may have undergone recent renovations, one thing remains constant at this Tropical Hut: great food. Despite the changes, their menu continues to feature all the classics you’ve come to love, from their signature burgers and rice meals to the flavorful palabok and comforting spaghetti. Have you had the chance to visit the newly renovated Tropical Hut in Escolta? While it might not be the most common stop for food crawls, being situated away from the more famous Ongpin and Salazar Streets, this classic Filipino burger joint truly deserves some love.

This branch in Escolta, the only one in downtown Manila, now boasts a fresh, modern look. As per their branch manager, this renovation is their way of thanking their customers who have supported the brand throughout the years – even before its resurgence in 2022. 🍔

Question: Ano ang kwentong Tropical Hut mo?

STREET-STYLE FOOD COURTESY OF VEGE SELECT AND ENG BEE TIN 🥢🥡🍡🍢🥟

Last year’s Chinese New Year celebration ignited the surge of street-style food in Chinatown MNL.

Vege Select, situated at Ongpin corner Salazar Street, led this trend with its street-style dumplings. They later expanded their offerings to include sugar cane juice and vegetable skewers.

In a similar vein, Eng Bee Tin introduced the TikTok-trending “Binondo Bites,” showcasing their signature (fried) xiao long bao.

Just recently, Vege Select also started selling tanghulu, a traditional Chinese snack featuring rock sugar-coated fruits like strawberries and Mandarin grapes.

Eng Bee Tin, for its part, is teasing a new offering for next week, rice in a box — bringing a familiar concept with a fresh twist. While not entirely new, as they have done this before, it is expected to be another hit.

The introduction of these innovative culinary offerings injects vitality into the heart of Chinatown MNL, appealing to the tastes of both dedicated food enthusiasts and discerning tourists. Here’s hoping all of these will contribute to a heightened appreciation for the unique charm of Chinatown MNL.

One of the newest additions to the food scene in Chinatown MNL in the past year is Zhengxin Chicken Steak, a small fast-food-style store located in Tomas Mapua Street.

A franchise from a well-known snack brand in China, Zhengxin has successfully expanded its reach to various countries since its launch in 2000, including the U.S., Japan, Vietnam, and now the Philippines.

True to its name, Zhengxin Chicken Steak specializes in an array of delectable offerings centered around everyone’s favorite theme — fried chicken, akin to Taiwan’s renowned Hot-Star brand.

From chicken popcorn to burgers, they also feature enticing BBQ skewers, as well as rice meals designed to tantalize the Filipino palate.

The prices are affordable, ranging from P150 to P300, and all ingredients are imported, providing patrons with an authentic experience that feels as if they’ve taken a quick food trip to China.

You can find them at 548 Tomas Mapua St, Santa Cruz, Manila, near David’s Tea House. They are also available at Foodpanda.

It’s been more than a year since Fruitas acquired Ling Nam, the storied noodle house in Chinatown MNL. In the months following the acquisition, Ling Nam underwent slight renovations at its main branch on T. Alonzo Street. The old signage and antiquated interior are gone, replaced by a more modernized restaurant feel. It now boasts a contemporary appearance while retaining the nostalgic charm of the past.

The good news is that amidst these changes, Ling Nam’s signature noodles and siopao recipes have remained unchanged.

Since the acquisition, Ling Nam has expanded its offerings by introducing fried siopao, a nod to a popular Chinatown MNL favorite. The franchise has also expanded, with stalls and new branches all around the Metro.

While it’s delightful to witness an original Chinatown MNL brand thriving and being more known to more Filipinos, we sincerely hope that the new owner will continue to cherish and preserve its essence.

Ano ang paborito mo sa Ling Nam?
