Hitchhiking Thailand vol. 2 - stop-over at a police station.

After a fantastic 200km long ride through Thai mountains at the back of a pick-up (great to develop kinetosis by the way :) ) we were hyped to find out what the road may bring. Well it was a not very well english speeking man who was offering us to take us to the bus station. After our polite refusal he explained it was not an offer but a demand. Oh, and also that he is a police officer. Even though we tried explaining that we wanted to hitchhike and therefore don't have spare money for the bus, he insisted that we come with him. The bus station turned out to be right next to the police station (how convenient! ) which was obviously also were we were headed. After 15 minutes of explaining again what are we doing and why we don't want to take the bus we were "explained" that either we go by bus or we get our visas canceled and leave the country. Sitting in the bus we were thinking what the hell are the chances that in the first car we stop is a police man... The rest of the journey to the southern Thailand went much better, people here stop within few minutes and drivin at the back of the pick-ups with the wind in your hair is just great!

In Thailand you don't even have to hitchhike - you are just walking along the road late in the evening and suddenly a luxury white BMW stops in front of you. First we were a bit unsure about it but yes - the super kind and awesome girl in the car really stopped for us and drove us with her friend to a little paradise in the middle of the mountains and jungle. Pai. Thank You Anne and Chef :)

A few days in Bangkok - eating all the local street food when you never know what is it gonna be when ordering but always tastes awesome, enjoying a swimming pool on the roof of a luxury hotel for free, experiencing the incredible diversity of the city with the stunning hotels right next to a slum full of poverty and all the buddhist temples, partying at the "backpackers capital" Khao San Road... Now we are leaving this incredible city that we still dont know what exactly to think about to hitchhike around Thailand, relying on the kindness of people on the road once again...Wish us luck :)

How far: 2128km

How long: 8 days

How: 19 cars, 2 trucks, 1 bus and 1 ferry

Who: 35 people who helped us

Sleeping: 2 X at the houses of strangers, 2 X in a tent, 1 X in an old boat, 1 X in the back of a truck and 1 X in a hostel in downtown Oslo (we had to…)

Food eaten from the garbage bin: ½ serving of penne with cheese sauce (probably), 2 pieces of bread, 1 piece of Danish blue cheese (hopefully)

We made it! :)

But above all - one of the nicest and most welcoming people we've ever met - Lillian. She picked us up, brought us to her home for the lunch and when after more than three hours of no one stopping for us we came back nocking on her door, she offered us a shower, dinner and the bed. Faith in humanity restored. Thank you a ton, Lillian!

Welcome everyone and get ready for some laughs and tears during the following year, many times possibly simultaneously. The two of us with very low travelling experience, lack of self-preservation, almost no money BUT with are on our journey around the world! :)

After a month spent in more or less comfort above the Arctic Circle we´ve decided to head south. The plan for now is to hitchhike 1850km (piece of cake! :) ) to the beautiful city of Bergen, staying there for a while and on 7th May catching a flight from Oslo to nowhere else than Bangkok! :) As we´ve already learned the plans don´t always go according to the plan though, so please feel free to follow us on our journey here on facebook and in case we got lost or kidnapped call the police or something...

Enough of jibber jabber - here is one of our mountain adventures (reading these longer stories is highly recomended as quality procrastination ;) ) with a few pictures. Hopefully the next post is from the road somewehre between Tromso and Bergen! Wish us luck :)
