What a magnificent weekend it was, celebrating the Swiss Italian Festa and exploring the unique culture and enduring legacy of these settlers in Central Victoria and Melbourne.

We were transported back to 1904 when 14 year old Amelia Musso was sent to Daylesford from Tuscany, Italy to look after her uncle who lived in the goldfields. Maria Triaca Harris and Cathy Samsury took us on an oral and written journey through Amelia’s life and her intergenerational influence which continues today.

As part of the Swiss Italian Festa 2024, our Cammino di Hepburn guests had the extraordinary opportunity to visit and enter Zelman Cottage in Hepburn Springs.

This is the former country home of Victor Zelman and his wife, Clara Borsa. The Borsa family built the first guesthouse in Hepburn Springs, Borsa House, in the 1880s.

Victor Zelman painted the Australian landscape murals in this unique architecturally designed home.

This home is open for public viewing on Sunday 27 October at 1pm for the Swiss Italian Festa

We will be holding our special In Conversation with Maria Triaca Harris to talk about her grandmother’s story, Amelia on Sunday 27 October at 11am at Radius Art in Hepburn Springs.

IN CONVERSATION with MARIA HARRIS, Amelia’s granddaughter, we discover what Daylesford and Hepburn Springs was like in 1904 for young Amelia, confronted by a strange landscape, culture and language.

Maria recalls the stories of courage and resilience, loneliness and humiliation, strength and generosity that her grandmother told.

Daylesford winter weather was no deterrent for these formidable and fabulous women from Brisbane - they fuelled up on our ‘welcome’ The Chocolate Mill, Daylesford chocolates and soaked up the history and culture of our beautiful town. It was a superb way to enjoy the day!

As part of it was a deep privilege to participate in the Cultural Landscapes Tour of Lalgambuk (Mt Franklin) with Prof Barry Golding (Federation University) and hosted by The Great Dividing Trail Association and the Hepburn Shire Council.
The Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony was led by Uncle Ricky and his brother from the Dja Dja Wurrung.

We learnt more than we could have ever imagined and our history is rich, deep, proud and unique and we must keep the fires burning.
