That’s right! We said it- a PLANT eating SHARK! 🦈 🌱
Bonnethead sharks are the only known shark species to consume seagrass and utilize nutrients from the plants for their growth and energetic needs!
At first scientists thought the seagrass in their stomachs was from “sloppy eating”- a by product of consuming crusteans and mollusks living in seagrass beds. But further investigations found that up to 50% of their diet is compromised of seagrass- a very high proportion for accidental consumption!
This lead to more studies, eventually finding that the sharks are able to digest and metabolize the plant matter! 🦈🌱
