Disket Monastery

Abode on a cliff above Disket village.It belongs to the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It was founded by Changzem Tserab Zangpo, a disciple of Tsong Khapa, founder of Gelugpa sect, in the 14th century. . located at a distance of around 120 kms from Leh. There are around 100 plus Buddhist monks are staying in the monastery currently.

Diskit Monastery is connected to Mongol mythology in that the monastery is believed to be the place where an evil anti-Buddhist Mongol king or chieftain once lived and was killed near the monastery grounds but is said to have been resurrected several times. Today, the wrinkled head and hand of the deceased chief is still there, holding by white chitamani(Rgon-kar) in chapel of deity.
One of the main points of interest is the Maitreya statue as you can see in snow covered pictures installed to commemorate the visit of the 14th Dalai Lama to this monastery in 2006 it contains a 32 metres (106 ft) high statue of Maitreya, the largest such statue in Ladakh,
gives the visitors an adorable view of Nobra valley, panoramic and exemplary.
