🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏥 Talgarth Asylum 🏥🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

This was our first Asylum that we have done, We did do this just as the sun set but it was most certainly the most errie out of all of then (since doing this explore we've done two more asylums) We never got round to doing the whole site and missed a few bits... still gives me an excuse to go back for a over nighter 🙈.

This one has been done to the hills and back so I'll keep the write up brief.

Talgarth Mental Asylum was commissioned in 1900 and 43 acres of land was purchased with the Asylum built in 1903. Consisting of 12 wards capable of housing 352 patients. After many updates with the change in times and demands it finally closed its at the end of 1997.. In 1999 a Welsh Office Minister and his wife purchased the huge site for 355k which was surrounded in scandal..
The owner of our camp who has lived in the area his whole life told us that the slate roof tiles were removed at the new owners request and then sold on for approximately £1million. As you'd expect, Having no roof for 24 years, it's not exactly usable no more without huge investment.

This Asylum was a relatively late in the day compared to others and changing times in medicine and treatments. The growth of scientific medicine resulted in the psychiatric concept of mental hygiene which recognised that mental illness was a disorder of the nervous system rather than the failings of a week personality and sort to identify the biological causes of mental illness for the first time. Psychiatric diseases were now being viewed as medical problems requiring medical treatments. Throughout Britain the great Asylums were beginning to be referred to as Hospitals.

🏥 Shoebury House Hospital 🏥

The hospital was originally built as a pre-war convalescent home, It had many uses up until its closure in 2008 by the NHS.. Sadly can't find any detailed info online though🤣

In 2018, Arsonists were to blame for the deliberate fire that was started which damaged over 50% of the building, taking out the roof and some upper flooring..
The building was being demolished within day's and along with all the heavy machinery, sat a security guard in his car... thus meaning no real external shots before it went..
I've added a couple of stock images found online..
A few rooms were completely gutted although I managed to get some rare snaps from the Lift service room which was a lil tricky to access..

🏭🇦🇺 Derelict Power Station 🇦🇺🏭

This was a failed explore from our last minute trip to Australia a few months back.. Research showed no fences, cameras or security and we met all 3 instantly!!
Unfortunately there was 0% chance of getting in and even got a "well done" over the P.A. system as I made my way down a bank behind the building.

Construction started on the Coal and Oil Power Station in 1946 and took 5 years to complete.. It also became the first major power generating station to operate at 50hz in the west of the country.
It was closed in 1985 and has been left to the elements since...

Less than half a mile from where I used to live, sits this beautiful old station.. Its been sat empty for over 12 years and has been on the explore list for a while. But recently 'explorers' did the location and sent their explore straight to the local papers for exposure. Needless to say it was immediately bolted back up and building plans are being fast tracked to renovate it.

Thankfully we found another way in 🤫

Way back in the 1840, Essex was in need of a Police force. Crime was rife and needed to be stopped. In 1846 the first Police Station was built in the town (now a Premier shop, see pic). This small building held 2 tiny cells in the basement.

But come 1910 the area had grown so vastly a larger station was needed, further to that, in 1914 the area was granted full county borough status and a Independent force was introduced. The same year the new station was built, although the force didn't move to its new premises until 1919, where it stayed until closure in 2007.

Internally the building is a mess, graffiti everywhere, dead pigeons n pigeon s**t in everyroom, wires stripped from everything and huge holes in the roof (surprisingly, sections of the upper floor are still holding up) but if you look closely can still catch a glimpse of how it looked it its heyday.

A medieval stone bridge, sits within one of Paderne's Valleys. Originally a Roman bridge sat in its place until it was renovated 1711.

Both at the bridge and further downstream there were watermills, but unfortunately the pictures I got of the information were in Portuguese and untranslatable 🙈

↙️🏃‍♀️ Deep Level Shelter - London ↙️🏃‍♀️

1 of 8 deep level shelters located across London, originally 10 were planned, The first was stopped at St Paul's after concerns for the stability of the building's above, The other was to be at The Oval which I believe stopped because of flooding.. (I could be wrong)

Each shelter could hold upto 8,000, although construction wasn't started until 1940 during the Blitz after public demand. The shelters were completed in 1942 by which time the Blitz had eased, So were used by Military and government officials. When bombing increased once again in 1944, 5 sites opened to the public.

⛺️⛺️ Prisoner Of War Camp 116 ⛺️⛺️

This beautiful little site sits just out of sight from a busy little village road.

It once housed around 1500 prisoners believed to be mostly German, Italian, and Austrians captured in Europe and the northern African regions during WW2 and would often be put to work at local farms.

Several automobiles, farming machinery, and a weird shed on wheels have been left to rot, literally turning into dust and disappearing into thin air!

One or two structures are on their last legs, with sections either missing or roofs on the verge of giving in.

We visited on Boxing Day, and coincidentally, back on the 26th Dec 1945, the prisoners played the locals in a football match, winning convincing 11-0 with a report 700 people watching from the sides.
