Lookout Mountain, Chattanooga

I took this photo a few years ago while hunting for history.

Our mountain is 2389 feet tall and hosts a plethora of historical accounts. A few accounts from the Revolutionary War mention a battle in the 1780s.

Missionaries arrived in the 1820s and coined the name rock city related to our current attraction, Rock City.

In the 1850s, Colonel James A. Whiteside purchased/was gifted the majority of the mountain.

Robert Cravens purchased much of that, and then the War Between the States took place... The Cravens’s House was built in 1855. Their shed/kitchen adjacent is likely the oldest standing structure in the original city limits of Chattanooga. The house itself was burned during the War Between the States, but the shed/kitchen remained.

1863 would see major military operations between the Confederate and Union armies.

Point Park was established in 1905 and still hosts thousands of visitors each year 😀
