Recently refurbished in exquisite detail, this extraordinary camp lies on the north-western tip of Chief’s Island in the middle of the Okavango. But this is no ordinary island either. Here, only the best-of-the-best will do, and only a privileged few will get to do it. They call Mombo the ‘Place of Plenty’. From an abundance of big cats to even bigger elephant and buffalo herds, and glimpses of some of Africa’s most endangered species like pangolin, rhino and wild dog, this is hands-down the best game viewing on earth. While we don’t like to talk about money, we will say this is some of the best you’ll ever spend.

Modern and magnificent. That’s Thorntree River Lodge for you. With its open-fronted suites bang on the river’s edge, private plunge pools, and your very own in-room bar cart (Houston, we have a problem), it’s to die for. Sure, there are a million things to do in Livingstone – a million and one, if you count its jaw-dropping main attraction, the thundering grand dame herself. But when you’re ready to recharge your batteries between safaris (not just your camera ones), these shaded decks and lazy palms await. Collapse into a deep sleep, perchance to dream of misty rainbows, Zambezi sunsets and bottomless cookie jars. Is there honestly anything better?

Victoria Falls & Livingstone, wild and wonderful and gateway to Africa's Safari Eden.

Both Zimbabwe and Zambia will tell you these Falls are theirs; a tale of two cities – or towns, rather – whose names are merely variations on a theme. Livingstone and Victoria Falls both offer equally magnificent views, sumptuous five-star retreats, spectacular game viewing, and epic Zambezi “booze cruises”. And each has their own international airport, giving neither a particular leg up on the other.

You can't get more on the mountain than Camissa House. Its literally on top of the city. But rest assured, this charming hideaway wouldn’t look down on anyone, least of all Cape Town, the best city in the world. (Thank you Telegraph)
