Hike Cancellations
The hike leader is responsible for canceling a hike. A hike cancellation will usually be posted on the club's message board. If possible, the hike leader will also go to the meeting place to inform anyone who shows up that the hike has been canceled. If we are under a severe weather warning, such as impassable roads or extreme cold, the leader is not expected to risk going to the meeting place. The leader should inform the Membership Chairperson and the Trail Blazer or Hike Coordinator if a hike is canceled. THE SIX-PACK OF PEAKS CHALLENGE
To participate, you take on the challenge specific to your area and hike the six peaks in the challenge. For example, the Colorado Six-Pack requires you to hike Bergen Peak, Rocky Mountain, Birthday Peak, Horseshoe Mountain, Mount Sherman, and Grays Peak. The peaks increase in difficulty with Bergen Peak standing at 9,708 feet in elevation and the last two mountains reaching over 14,000 feet! There are three different membership options for the Challenge. Starter costs $35 dollars and gets you access to the challenger hike log and virtual peak badges. It also gets you into the finishers party and connects you with other people in your area who are taking the challenge. The higher levels of membership include extra benefits like sticker packs, patches, and t-shirts.

How fit do I need to be for hiking?
Start off slow. Build up your fitness on flat ground first. If you are starting from scratch, start working on your fitness on the flat ground around your neighbourhood, in your local park or along a beach.

“If you’re starting off from the couch, maybe try a local 30-minute or 3km walk that’s flat first, take a rest on day two, and then try another 3km flat walk on day three,” advises John Kavanagh from the Dublin and Wicklow Mountain Rescue.

Once you’ve built up some fitness, head for the hills. Start out on forest roads, using marked and well-maintained trails that have signage so you don’t get lost. It’s good to begin with fairly easy walks that have a good trail surface underfoot.

Keep it short: Walk short distances and work up to longer walks as your body gets used to it. The Dublin Mountains Partnership also has a list of recreational trails online that you can choose from, with good descriptions and advice on the distances and altitudes that you will climb. If you’re interested in exploring walks and hikes along the Wild Atlantic Way, there’s a list of them online, with national parks, scenic

Hiking for Beginners: 10 Essential Tips
Pack the 10 essentials.
The 10 essentials have gradually shifted from a list of items to a list of systems. These are the systems you should pack to stay safe in the outdoors, including facing a potential overnight. Depending on the length and remoteness of your hike, expand or minimize each system. For example, on a short summer hike near services, a compact emergency blanket should be fine. However, a remote winter hike would require something more extensive. Here are the 10 essential systems:

Ten Essential Systems

Navigation (map & compass)
Sun protection (sunglasses & sunscreen)
Insulation (extra clothing)
Illumination (headlamp/flashlight)
First-aid supplies
Fire (waterproof matches/lighter/candle)
Repair kit and tools
Nutrition (extra food)
Hydration (extra water)
Emergency shelter (tent/plastic tube tent/garbage bag)

Indiahikes will take children on trekking trips around your city, either for a day or over a weekend, as per your choice. We truly believe that children can get closer to nature as compared to adults and we strive to make children realize the importance of what lies around them. We have identified many trekking locations around Bangalore, Delhi, Ooty and many other cities where we take children. These treks do not require advanced technical skills and they are all child-safe. Indiahikes will be responsible for childrens safety on these trips. Indiahikes sends it best trained trek leader on treks and hikes. Our trek leader is Certified Wilderness First Aid Responder with experience in high altitude as well. We implement high levels of Safety and Evacuation strategies for all our high altitude treks- we maintain the same standards for our local treks also. We make sure that children are in safe hands and any sort of emergency is well attended to. We try to be friends with children so that there is a mutual level of understanding rather than being authoritative. We want learning to be a fun process.

Recently 12 hikers completed the six-mile Jarrad Gap Loop Trail at the Lake Winfield Scott recreation area, teeth chattering at the start, but as the sun crept up, it turned out to be a beautiful day. Jay Seward led the group and Ken Becheley swept any stragglers. In February boots were laced again as 22 hikers tamed the Bear Hair Gap Trail overlooking Lake Trahlyta in Vogel State Park. The day was misty and foggy which minimized views, but the hiking and comradery were excellent. After lunch at The Back Porch, which one guy notes has a great Pink Floyd album cover painting in the mens restroom, the crowd headed for home. With temperatures feeling downright pleasant as March peeks over our shoulder, why not gather the kids and grandkids and hike the miles of trails in Big Canoe? Secrets of nature will be revealed which will enchant any child. Exploring the woods is a great adventure; after all, what kid ever remembers a great day of watching television? Trail maps are available at the Fitness Center. If you like to put one foot in front of the other and commune with the Great Outdoors, the Hiking Club might be a good match for you. Email Steve Papke at [email protected] and hell connect you with the next adventurous ramble.

The weather was perfect, unlike other years when ice, snow and frigid temperatures hampered hikers as they made their way through the woods in complete silence. Sometimes the Hiking Clubs annual Christmas walk had to be called off due to dangerous conditions. But this year, 38 hikers made their way to Big Canoes log cabin nestled deep in the woods. During the trek over hill and vale, not one word was spoken. Upon reaching their destination, the carol Silent Night echoed through the woods as voices rose to celebrate the season. The evenings walk is a moving, almost mystical, experience. The Silent Night hike is one of the highlights of the year for Big Canoes Hiking Club. Of course, chattering is allowed on the way back home as hikers get ready for the party ahead. Norma and Rob Emerson hosted a potluck dinner at hikes end, where spouses joined the fun. And, a good time was had by all!
