DID YOU KNOW...Frank Welker has voiced Fred Jones for almost 50 years?

The legendary voice actor currently has 761 acting credits on his IMDb page, but at 23 years old he received his first voice acting gig as the ascot-wearing Fred Jones. “I could barely read the copy and didn’t know which end of the mike was electrified, which explains why shock therapy has no effect on me,” Welker told Verbicide magazine. “Joe Barbera was fantastic and really gave me a chance; he would give me the opportunity to read for all the characters, not just Freddy, and that really opened things up for me.” Welker has voiced Fred in every Scooby series except A Pup Named Scooby Doo, and he’s provided Scooby’s voice since 2002.

DID YOU KNOW...Iwao Takamoto created Scooby-Doo's features?

The Japanese-American artist got his start working on Disney films before he segued to the Hanna-Barbera world. Takamoto drew the original sketches for Scooby—along with the human counterparts—and based the dog on inverting a Great Dane. “There was a lady that bred Great Danes at Hanna-Barbera,” he told the Cartoon Network. “She showed me some pictures and talked about the important points of a Great Dane—like a straight back, straight legs, small chin and such. I decided to go the opposite and give him a hump back, bowed legs, big chin and such. Even his colour is wrong.”

DID YOU KNOW...Frank Sinatra's "Strangers in the Night" inspired Scooby's name?

TV executive Fred Silverman spoke about being on a red eye flight to L.A. and couldn’t sleep. CBS had just rejected his idea of a group of teens and a dog trying to solve mysteries, so he was in the middle of coming up with new ideas. “As we’re landing, Frank Sinatra comes on [the PA], and I hear him say, ‘Scooby-doo-be-doo.’ [Note: Sinatra actually says “doobie,” not “Scooby.”] I said, that’s it—we’ll call it Scooby-Doo.”

DID YOU KNOW...Scooby-Doo is loosely based on ABBOTT and Costello?

As a kid, TV executive Fred Silverman would watch Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein and said he always thought that kids in a haunted house would be a big hit.

Silverman pitched CBS a show called Who’s S-S-Scared?, but the dog was in the background. “I was convinced this was going to be the biggest hit that we’d ever had, even though nobody knew what the hell it was,” Silverman said.

He pitched to then-CBS president Frank Stanton, who told him, “We can’t put that on the air. That’s just too frightening.” Silverman had to rework the concept of the show and made it more about Scooby. “And our Abbott and Costello will be Scooby-Doo and Shaggy,” Silverman said. “In a matter of two hours we had revised the concept and it worked great.”

Meet Kayla Ossachuk (a.k.a. Lucy)!

Kayla is so excited for her first dinner theatre experience (especially the dessert!) and the chance to perform as Lucy van Pelt – one of the most stubborn, crabby, vain, loud, temperamental and antagonistic characters in the Peanuts comic strip. After a brief stint in Toronto, Kayla’s happy to be back in Fredericton acting again – most recently as Delores in Branch Out Productions’ Sister Act. During the day, she can be found playing video games or running her video production and social media management company from her kitchen table. Basically planning her queendom, just like Lucy 😉

Meet Shawn Bower (a.k.a. Charlie Brown)!

Shawn is excited to play the part of gentle, insecure, and lovable Charlie Brown! Full of significant determination and hope, Charlie Brown is one of the most iconic cartoon characters and great American archetypes of all time. This is Shawn’s third musical dinner theatre experience with us – he played Cousin Eddie in An Elf’s Christmas Vacation (aBunchOfUs Productions) and Luke Skywalker in Christmas Wars (aBunchOfUs Productions). He’s also appeared in several instalments of Christmas , and sings regularly with Maple Syrup barbershop quartet. Not only that, but he fronts our band Fire in Hand along with Jill Scaplen. Add to that a crazy work schedule, a beautiful wife, two beautiful children and 2 VERY large Great Danes and life is indeed a perfect storm!

Meet Rick McCaskill (a.k.a. Snoopy)!

Rick is no stranger to the stage! In fact, you may have seen him in Christmas@theplayhouse, singing with the River Valley Barbershop chorus, or performing opera in Dido and Aeneas. He’s played Robert in Sondheim’s Company, and Belle’s father in Beauty and the Beast. But, you likely didn't realize he played the characters every kid dreams of: Yoda, Darth Vader and Chewbacca in aBunchOfUs Productions’ Christmas Wars. And he'll be going incognito with us again when he plays everyone's favourite beagle, Snoopy! Rick is a husband and father of 2, a UX designer by day and a Maker by night.

Meet Jill Scaplen (a.k.a. Sally Brown)!

Jill is excited to take on the role of Charlie Brown’s pragmatic little sister, Sally Brown. Sally is a good-hearted, funny, friendly, cute, sweet, silly and innocent girl. But, with a pinch of lazy, ignorant, naive, obsessive and greedy, who can’t relate? Jill is happy to be back for another year of dinner theatre shenanigans and rockin’ music with Fire in Hand Productions. She was a founder/player with aBunchOfUs Productions (A Rockin’ White Christmas, An Elf’s Christmas Vacation, Christmas Wars) and a player and creative for several seasons of Christmas . Other favourites include Avenue Q (MTM), The Wedding Singer (G&S), and Into the Woods (Back East Productions). By night Jill fronts the band Fire in Hand along with Shawn Bower and by day she’s the creative manager at the University of New Brunswick.
