On August 12, 2024, Alberta introduced a temporary special measure to support individuals affected by the recent wildfires.

The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) will now accept open work permits issued by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for the Alberta Opportunity and Tourism and Hospitality Streams.

This initiative is designed to assist those who need to transition from employer-specific permits to open work permits due to their inability to continue working for their current employers. The special measure applies to permits issued between July 19, 2024, and November 30, 2024.

The U.S. is accelerating the processing of asylum claims at its northern border in an effort to reduce illegal crossings from Canada. Under the revised Safe Third Country Agreement (STCA), asylum seekers must present their documents to U.S. officials during initial screenings and now have only four hours down from 24 hours to consult a lawyer.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, these changes are designed to streamline the process while maintaining fair access to asylum procedures. This adjustment comes in response to a significant increase in illegal crossings, with over 12,600 migrants detained in the first half of 2024, surpassing last year’s total.

In 2024, Canada welcomed over 3,000 newcomers through its Start-Up Visa (SUV) program, significantly surpassing last year’s numbers. Recent data from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reveals a steady influx of new permanent residents, with 560 arrivals recorded in both May and June.

This brings the total to 3,010 for the first half of the year, a remarkable 785.3% increase compared to the same period in 2023. The SUV program, designed to attract international entrepreneurs, has seen substantial growth in British Columbia, even as other provinces experienced declines. If this trend continues, Canada could see 6,020 new entrepreneurial immigrants by the end of the year.

If you’re unable to provide a reference letter for your Express Entry application, it’s important to include a signed letter explaining why. The immigration officer will determine if your work experience documentation is sufficient, so make sure to include as much supporting evidence as possible to prove your work history.

What happens if you don’t include a reference letter or adequate alternative proof?

IRCC will conduct a thorough check to ensure all required documents are present.
If your reference letter is missing, your application could be returned as incomplete.

An incomplete application means you’ll have to resubmit, which could delay your process and cause you to lose your current Invitation to Apply (ITA).

Important: A personal affidavit about your work experience isn’t accepted as valid proof. If you submit an affidavit instead of the required documentation, IRCC may return your application as incomplete.
