What's in your backyard? Mountain lions, the second-largest wild cat in North America after the jaguar, are powerful carnivores with sleek yellow-brown to gray-brown fur, long tails for balance, and impressive adaptability. Found in diverse habitats—from deserts to forests and wetlands—they thrive in Nevada's rugged terrain and dense cover. Solitary and wide-ranging, males roam territories up to 175 square miles, while females claim around 90. Unlike roaring big cats, mountain lions communicate with purrs, hisses, and eerie shrieks. As an “umbrella species,” their survival depends on conserving vast wilderness areas, benefiting countless other plants and animals that share their ecosystems. "Quarter Horse" by Averi Harold from West Plains High School

"This painting of a Quarter Horse represents the beauty of these beautiful animals and the unique colors of them. Quarter Horses are a powerful and noble breed of horse. This painting is special to me because I've spent many years riding and training horses of all kinds, so to be able to paint one of my favorite breeds was so fun to accomplish. Fr this painting I combined two horses I've ridden that both were very special to me. I think this painting fits this competition very well for what the theme was."

"Quarter Horse" and many other incredible pieces from the 2024 Youth Art Show are now on display at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum.

The Pahrump Field Office will hold a cactus sale on February 1 and 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the east side of Highway 95, near the decommissioned Elizalde Cement Plant, about 7 miles south of the town of Beatty. Plants will be available on a first-come, first-served basis to individuals.

Permits for these plants are being issued by BLM because the plants would otherwise be destroyed by construction. Harvesting any plants, including cacti and yucca (and Joshua trees), from public lands is illegal without a permit.

Purchases must be made by cash only and only people with a valid Nevada ID are eligible. Prices vary from $3.60 for a small cactus to $7.20 for larger cacti. Plants are not for resale. There is a limit of 25 total cacti per household for this sale.

Those interested in purchasing plants must bring their own materials to pick-up and move the plants. Large plants will require two to three people to successfully move. No driving is allowed on the site; participants will need to transport plants to their vehicle (wheelbarrows and carts are allowed.)

This just in, underwater potatoes have gathered for a meeting at Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge Complex.

What's that? Those aren't potatoes? Those are manatees? Apologies. We'll make the correction.

This just in, Florida manatees have huddled up at the Three Sisters Springs to stay warm during the recent cold weather in Florida. The gentle sea cows will rest along the sandy bottom of the spring as they conserve their energy and seek shelter in the warm (72 degrees Fahrenheit) spring waters.
