As of 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, this portion of Myakka Road is now open.

A portion of Myakka Road is closed to road traffic due to unsafe conditions. An engineering report identifies conditions of three large culverts under Myakka Road (0.44mi north of Clay Gully Road) are deteriorated to a point they are no longer safe for vehicles traveling on the road.

The culvert crossing consists of three corrugated steel plate pipes with each pipe having a measured span length of approximately 12 feet. The visual inspection of the culvert by engineers revealed severe structural deterioration. Road traffic on Myakka Road between Hancock Road and Clay Gully Road will be closed over the pipe culvert crossing because of the unsafe conditions.

Detour routes for eastbound traffic from Fruitville Road to Clay Gully Road (Sarasota County):
- Verna Road north to Singletary Road.
- Singletary Road east to State Road 70.
- State Road 70 east to MJ Road.
- MJ Road south to Clay Gully Road.

Detour routes for westbound traffic from Clay Gully Road to Fruitville Road (Manatee County):
- MJ Road north to State Road 70.
- State Road 70 west to Singletary Road.
- Singletary Road west to Verna Road.
- Verna Road south to Fruitville Road.

The detour is approximately 14 miles. Sarasota County will advise as plans to repair, replace or remove the culverts are determined.

Local access to residential driveways and the Crowley Museum will be available on Myakka Road between Hancock Road and the Crowley Museum.
