A Travel Tale This Page is about a boy and girl who leave their conventional lives behind to travel the world Confused yet? We come as a package.

We – Lena (a native Albanian raised in Germany) and Billy (a small town guy from Tennessee) met while living in the Boston area. We value the fact that our cultures and backgrounds are vastly different because it certainly keeps things interesting. Definitely one of those couples that do most everything together. Combined, we have many hobbies, but our shared passion is traveling. We love seeing t

he world, meeting new people, eating new food and experiencing new cultures. We hope you enjoy our little corner of the internet as we post photos, talk about our experiences and reveal things we learn along the way.

Thank you WCYB and all of you for the support. A special thanks to family, friends, neighbors and the long list of people who have helped us along the way. This trip has taught us that no matter where you are in the world, regardless of beliefs or social backgrounds - people are kind.

A Bristol, Tennessee couple does what many of us have dreamed of doing, at some point in our lives.

Being from the US of A and traveling for a year, some of these make us nod our heads and smile. It's a game we often play. The comments about tips, teeshirts and coffee to go -- guilty. We would like to add baseball caps, North Face fleeces, running shoes and polos. To be fair, it's easy to spot some English, Germans and Chinese tourists as well.

There's good news: we tip big.

We were intrigued by the little known pacific coast of Columbia. There are no roads connecting the coast to the populated areas of the country. To get here, you must take a small plane. Once you arrive, the only source of transportation is by boat. We came in search of uncrowded surf, but were not lucky with the waves. Instead, we met some great people and got a first hand look at this incredible jungle life.

An idyllic place on this beautiful earth. We spend 2 weeks exploring the jungle, playing with the village kids in the river and surfing on the carribean ocean. I am going to miss it.

In an attempt to share a little more about our day to day, I have a tale. Here is the back story- We’ve been in northern Peru for far too long, almost two months now. After 25,000km we decided to do some much needed maintenance before crossing over into Ecuador, basically an engine rebuild. Probably not smart considering our vehicle had less than 30 days before it had to be out of the country (things simply take longer here). We found out last week that failure to exit the country before the deadline results in a $350 fine for each day over, yikes! Well, yesterday was our last day. In a panic with the engine still scattered all over the “shop” floor, Lena had the bright idea to travel three hours north to the boarder and explain our situation in hopes of getting an extension. Like our backpacking days, we jumped on a “mini bus”, basically a standard family van configured with extra rows of seating, milk crates, standing room, whatever it takes to fit as many people as possible. Today was a personal best, 23 people in a van made for 12. In the 32C heat, we positioned ourselves in the rear, feeling the sweat and heat radiating off everyone pressed agains us. A hour into the trip and the bus loud with Peruvian music, open windows and passengers screaming into their phones, full blast speaker mode, the man molded agains Lena’s left side screams to the driver 6 rows up and asked him to pull off the road ahead and directs him to a women waiting on the curb. The man shouted to her (in Spanish of course) “is this the same one as the picture, is this the father?” The lady replies “Si Señor, si!" Confused, Lena and I just looked at each other as the lady hands it through the passenger window. Passengers started handing it back to him with no emotion. It wasn’t till it got half way that I realized it was a fighting roster… you’ve got to be kidding me! If you guys know Lena, you understand the severity of this situation, she is just now getting use to dogs, now she has to sit two hours snuggled up next to this. Now the happy ending, the chicken behaved, Lena survived and we got five extra days!

Sometimes it is easy to take things for granted, even while traveling. After a while, beautiful cities, mountain ranges or shorelines start to blend together and you leave your camera behind. Repetition tends to bore the mind and you become numb to the beauty and culture that surrounds you. It can take a fresh set of eyes to help you once again see what makes a journey like this so special. That is exactly what our friend Jogee did during her recent two week visit. Although the trip was far from ideal (due to mechanical issues, freezing nights at 15,000 feet, and horrific roads) she managed to stay optimistic and take tons of photos. We hope you enjoy our combined photos as much as we enjoyed having her with us.
