If you notice you have extra space in your luggage as you prepare for your upcoming trip to Costa Rica, you might think about bringing a little something to share with the local community or your service providers.

What to bring to give back is a question we get asked fairly often, so here are some thoughtful ideas that are easy to pack if you have the space! (If you are packing light, you could alternately plan to visit a mall or shopping center at the beginning of your trip in Costa Rica to pick up some items as mentioned below.) These donations will be greatly appreciated by those you meet during your travels! Boyero Tours can help you to identify the best places to donate or our team can facilitate these donations for you.

1. School Supplies
In many parts of Costa Rica, access to quality educational materials can be limited. Bringing school supplies like backpacks, notebooks, pens, colored pencils, or small educational games can be a wonderful way to support local students. These items can be gifted directly to schools or community centers, making a meaningful contribution to children's education. Dark blue socks are also helpful.

2. Sports Equipment
Costa Ricans are passionate about sports, especially soccer. If you have space, consider bringing a soccer ball, basketball, or even small items like jump ropes or frisbees. These can be a fun addition to local community centers, schools, or even just shared with children in neighborhoods.
3. Small Games or Puzzles
Travel games or puzzles can be a hit with families and children. Items that are bilingual or don’t require much translation like playing cards, board games, or even a simple puzzle can bring joy and encourage social interaction. These can be shared with families you meet or left in community centers.

4. Donations to Local Organizations
While not something you can physically carry, consider setting aside some funds to donate to local charities or community organizations. Research ahead of time to identify causes that resonate with you, such as wildlife conservation, dog rescue, education, or health initiatives.

Each small gift can make a big difference in someone’s day and foster a sense of connection between cultures. So as you pack your bags, think about what thoughtful items you can bring along to share the spirit of kindness and generosity. Happy travels!

You could fill a one month itinerary with a new activity every day in Costa Rica and never get bored. Between the beaches, rafting, ziplines, snorkeling, bioluminescent kayaking, nature hikes, and so much more, it can be hard to decide which activities to prioritize. But beyond the adrenaline-fueled activities, true adventure lies in risking vulnerability, embracing the unfamiliar, changing our world view and leaving a little piece of ourselves behind in the hearts of those we meet along the way.

When traveling, it is important to be vulnerable in a new place, learn some Spanish words, try new foods, be open to new experiences as well as be willing to connect with the people and places we encounter on our journeys.

Travel changes us and we have to be careful about the impact we leave on the places we visit. Whether wandering through the bustling feria, engaging in conversations with locals during a rural tour, or simply appreciating the beauty of a foreign landscape, the real thrill lies in the subtle but profound impact we have on the places and people we encounter.

Costa Rica is a small country encompassing 19,710 sq mi (51,060 km2) including close to 800 miles of spectacular coastline. Yet there are so many captivating destinations to explore.

When planning a trip to Costa Rica, many people have been caught off guard. Knowing some of the most common mistakes people make can help you avoid them:

1. Underestimating Travel Times
Costa Rica’s winding roads and sometimes challenging road conditions can make travel times longer than expected. Always allow extra time for transfers between destinations, especially if you’re traveling to remote areas.

2. Ignoring Weather Variability
Costa Rica has diverse microclimates. While it may be sunny in one region, another could be experiencing rain. Always check the weather and pack accordingly, including clothing that layers well and waterproof gear.

3. Not Exploring Beyond Popular Destinations
While places like Arenal and Manuel Antonio are beautiful and popular, don’t overlook less touristy areas. Locations like Osa Peninsula, Nicoya Peninsula, the Caribbean, Sarapiquí and Boruca offer breathtaking scenery and unique experiences.

4. Booking your flight to San José, California instead of San José, Costa Rica
This may seem obvious but it is important to pay attention to these small details when making reservations. The code for Costa Rica’s airport in the Central Valley is SJO and its official name is Juan Santamaría International Airport.

5. Not pre-booking tours and other travel services in high season
Many hotels, tours and activities sell out months in advance, especially in high season. Some tourists come thinking they can just wing it when they get here and plan to “just play it by ear” and then get frustrated when they are unable to partake in the experiences they planned on.

6. Relying Solely on Credit Cards
While many establishments accept credit cards, not all do, especially in remote areas. Always carry some cash (in colones) for small purchases or at markets. US dollars can also be useful if you decide not to exchange money.

7. Not Trying Local Cuisine
Costa Rican cuisine is delicious and diverse. Don’t miss out on local dishes like gallo pinto, ceviche, and arroz con pollo. Exploring local “sodas” or small family restaurants will enrich your culinary experience.

8. Ignoring Wildlife Etiquette
Costa Rica is home to incredible wildlife, but it’s crucial to respect their habitats. Always observe animals from a distance, don’t feed them, don’t touch them and of course follow your guide’s instructions.

Have you made any other mistakes? Are there any others that we should add to this list? 🌴✨

Costa Rica’s tropical climate brings new challenges like stronger UV rays and bugs. Taking care of your skin is a must during your trip and we have a few tips to make sure that you stay safe.

Sun in this Central American country can be intense, especially in the high-altitude rainforests and on sunny beaches. To avoid sunburn and long-term skin damage, protect your skin from harmful UV rays by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Choose mineral-based sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are effective and environmentally friendly. They’re also less harmful to coral reefs and marine life!

Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours and after swimming or sweating to ensure continuous protection. Don’t be fooled by the clouds either. If you can see a shadow, use sunscreen.

Costa Rica’s lush jungles are home to diverse wildlife, including insects. Avoid mosquito bites by using an insect repellent containing natural ingredients like DEET-free options, citronella, eucalyptus, or lemongrass. Opt for eco-friendly, non-toxic repellents to keep yourself safe while protecting the environment. Reapply insect repellent as needed throughout the day, especially if you’re venturing into dense jungle or out for evening activities.

Wearing long sleeves and pants can help to minimize your exposure to both sun and insects. Lightweight, breathable fabrics are perfect for staying comfortable in the heat.

Also, drink plenty of water, take breaks in shaded areas, and use a hat or sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun.

By following these simple tips, you’ll enjoy a safe, enjoyable, and environmentally conscious journey through Costa Rica’s breathtaking landscapes.

This was Sarah Joy's visit to Zarcero with Victoria, Marty, and John back in 2022. Here they visited the church, as well as the park's curious topiaries, which are crafted into whimsical designs. After this, their private driver took them to the hot springs in La Fortuna.

Costa Rica was voted #1 on the list of friendly countries in the 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards by Condé Nast Traveller. 🇨🇷❤️

https://www.cntraveller.com/gallery/friendliest-countries-world

With a score of 96.15, Costa Rica was mentioned not only for the warmth and kindness of its people but for being a leader in ecotourism, making it a destination that values both people and nature.

Costa Ricans, called “Ticos” and “Ticas,” are known for their smiles, willingness to help others and kindness. Even when they don’t speak the same language as the travelers that visit their country, they find ways to communicate and show kindness.

🌋 Did You Know? 🌋

Costa Rica is home to at least 6 active volcanoes, including the well-known destinations of Arenal, Poás, and Irazú! 🏔️ Each one offers unique landscapes and breathtaking views.

Arenal Volcano 🌋: Once one of the most active volcanoes in the world, Arenal is famous for its perfect conical shape and occasional lava flows. Located in the northern region of the country, its volcanic activity has shaped the surrounding landscape, creating lush rainforests and hot springs. A must when visiting this area is to enjoy soaking in the nearby natural hot springs, heated by the volcano’s geothermal activity.

Poás Volcano 🌋: Known for its massive crater, Poás is one of Costa Rica’s most visited volcanoes. Its crater lake, one of the largest in the world, is often filled with a stunning turquoise color. The area around Poás is also rich in cloud forests and diverse wildlife, making it a fascinating destination for nature lovers.

Irazú Volcano 🌋: Standing as the highest volcano in Costa Rica, Irazú offers breathtaking views of both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans on clear days. One of its oldest craters is now covered with black volcano ashes which makes walking over it like you are doing it on an alien planet.

Turrialba Volcano 🌋: Turrialba has been quite active in recent years, with occasional eruptions adding to its dramatic landscape. Its rugged terrain and volcanic soils are crucial for the surrounding agriculture, including the famous Costa Rican coffee.

All these volcanoes are national parks, offering stunning views, hiking trails, and rich biodiversity to explore. They’re adventure havens for those looking to explore volcanic landscapes and lush forests.

There are also 61 dormant and extinct volcanoes in Costa Rica. The country’s volcanic landscapes are a testament to its dynamic geological activity. It is interesting to note that a volcano is not actually considered active unless it has erupted in the past 11,000 years.

Do you know the names of the others not mentioned here? Which volcano would you love to explore? Let us know in the comments!

Costa Rica boasts a stunning variety of tropical fruits, each more vibrant and flavorful than the last. While there’s always something delightful to taste, it’s important to remember that Costa Rican fruits are seasonal, and even within this small country, fruit availability varies by region throughout the year.

Here are two of Costa Rica’s popular fruits that you absolutely must try on your next adventure:

Mamón Chino or Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum): Have you ever seen a fruit that looks like it belongs in a sci-fi movie? Meet the Mamón Chino, also known by its Malaysian name, Rambutan! With its softly spiked red peel and juicy, translucent flesh, this fruit is as intriguing as it is delicious. Rambutan offers a sweet, mildly tangy flavor with a refreshing juiciness that will transport your taste buds straight to paradise. To eat, take off the red peel and chew off the flesh but be careful not to chew on the small seed inside. Best enjoyed fresh or in fruit salads, its peak season is from May to September. It's not endemic to Costa Rica, but it has become one of the favorite tropical fruits grown here.

Zapote o Mamey (Pouteria sapota): Indulge in the creamy decadence of Zapote, a true Costa Rican treasure. Generally enjoyed fresh, the orange-fleshed fruit has a taste that some compare to a brown sugar-covered sweet potato, with notes of pumpkin, caramel and cantaloupe. Whether eaten fresh, blended into smoothies, or incorporated into desserts, Zapote’s rich flavor profile makes it a must-try. Just peel it and enjoy during its peak season from October to March.

Ready to dive into these exotic flavors? Experience the best of Costa Rican cuisine up close on your next vacation.
