The ruin of Dunalastair House, a baronial-style mansion, was built in 1862 by General Sir John Macdonald of Dalchosnie, the then owner of Dunalastair. Dunalastair estate had previously been the home of the Clan Donnachaidh of Scotland, which includes names such as Robertson, Duncan, and Reid, until the estate was sold in the 1850's by George Duncan Robertson, 18th Chief of Clan Donnachaidh.

The ruins now visible at Dunalatair are those of the third house to be built on the site. Alexander Robertson of Struan, a staunch Jacobite, lived in a house called the Hermitage which is thought to have been on the site of or near to the present Dunalastair House. This was destroyed by fire after the 1745 uprising.

A double tower house was then built on the site in around 1800 which was known as Mount Alexander. This was demolished by General MacDonald in the 1850's in order to build the present house. This is by far one of the spookiest castles in my opinion. Today the ruin is derelict, fenced up and inaccessible. Drones are also no longer permitted at the site.

Standing against a backdrop of rolling hills and set within its own glorious gardens, Crathes Castle is every inch the classic Scottish tower house – and a fantastic day out for all the family. Crathes Castle is 15 miles west of Aberdeen and 3 miles east of Banchory on the A93.

The Burnett family, who lived in the castle for over 350 years, had roots in the area dating back to 1323 when Robert the Bruce granted them nearby land. Alexander Burnett built the castle in the 16th century, an intricate maze of turrets, towers, oak panels and painted ceilings, many of which survive beautifully to this day.
