Where Vultures Dare!
This Sunday the Hike Said Fred group hiked the 10km trail at Nadias Peak in Haartebeespoort.
Another beautiful hike in perfect weather.
The #1 Rule when hiking with Hike Said Fred is "Hike At Whatever Pace You're Comfortable With", so no hiker feels like they need to hike any faster or slower than the pace they set for themselves.
Our Hike Masters are on hand to ensure each hiker who starts the trail, finishes the trail, safely and comforted in the knowledge that nobody gets left behind.
Join us next weekend as we hike a different venue, with the same care and commitment to hikers.
This was another training hike for those joining us on The Otter Trail (end August) and Tsitsikamma Hike (1st week of September).

This was another training hike for our hikers joining us on the Otter Trail (end of August) and Tsitsikamma Hike (first week of September).

This Sunday our hikers did the 13km route at Rustig. Many for the first time, and our Hike Masters ensured every hiker conquered their fear of this challenging trail.
Next week we do it again, at a different venue.

Leopard Trail
Group 2
July 2024
Another epic hike with Hike said Fred, this time in the majestic mountains of Baviaanskloof as we hiked the Leopard Trail.
Our Group 2 hikers arrived with our shuttle the night before the hike, where we stayed over at basecamp and enjoyed a group braai and hikers were given a hike briefing.
The weather forecast indicated rain for the week, unlike Group 1 who experienced sunny skies during their hike and only had rainfall at night.
The next day was hike day, and hikers were eager to hit the trail.
As always, our Hike Master ensured the safety of everyone in our group.
Meals were a combination of pooitjie over the fire and delicious Durban Curry prepared by our Hike Master and fellow hikers.
Group 2 experienced snow, rain, sleet as well as clear skies across their hiking days, and loved every bit of the experience.
On completion of the hike our hikers stayed over at Basecamp to embark on the Cedar Falls hike as well as Heroes Hill the following day.
Another night of braaing and stories around the campfire, before everyone retired to bed to be up bright and early for our shuttle to take them back to the airport in time to catch their flights home.
Thank you to all who joined us on this wonderful experience.
We look forward to seeing you on the next one!

July 2024
Another epic hike with Hike said Fred, this time in the majestic mountains of Baviaanskloof as we hiked the Leopard Trail.

Meals were plentiful and we dare say some completed the trail carrying a few extra pounds ;)
On completion of the hike our hikers stayed over at Basecamp to embark on the Cedar Falls hike the following day.

Early morning hike briefings alongside the Crocodile River in Haartebeespoort. Sunday mornings like these are the reason we hike. Haarties River Hiking Trail in Haartebeespoort was an absolute treat this weekend. Hike Said Fred hikers did the 10km route and the views were breathtaking 😁

Greetings hiking community.
Unfortunately we find ourselves in trying times which have negatively affected our wonderful hiking community, and has put tremendous strain on the hiking venues.
I've been in contact with many venues and know many owners personally, and believe me when I say that running a hiking venue is no easy task.
Between maintenance, safety and security, management of venues and trails, as well as having emergency support staff on standby, running and managing a hiking venue is a full time job and can be thankless at times.
I've posted previously on safety and security measures hikers can take when out on a hike.
Currently we're working on broader scale solutions to make the venues safer.
This is a call to all venues to contact me so we can brainstorm ideas that are workable and feasible both in the short term and the long term.
We cannot allow the negative elements targeting our hiking community to affect the one activity which brings us peace and joy.
We need to work together to save and protect our trails, and feel safe when we're at our beautiful venues.

Good afternoon hikers.
Im sure most of you are aware of the increase in muggings along some of our regular hiking routes.
I've been in constant contact with venues to look at ways in which we can combat this crime.
Unfortunately due to the vast area most hiking routes cover, this is a rather difficult exercise.
The following is a list of some ways you can try to prevent yourself from becoming a victim of crime on your hike.
* hike in groups, never alone.*
* your next of kin or emergency contact about your hiking schedule*
* an emergency contact number with your Hike Master or another member of your group*
* your valuables including cellphones and wallets in your vehicle*
* to the venue about leaving your vehicles keys in their safekeeping*
* pepper spray in close reach (I usually have a taser with me on every hike)*
* 't make yourself a target by exposing jewelery, cameras and items of high value on your hike*
* you're not comfortable with carrying pepper spray, wear a whistle around your neck. This way you can alert your group if you encounter danger*
* awareness has saved many hikers from becoming victims of crime. Be aware of your surroundings and alert to anyone who doesn't look like they belong on the trail.*
* confronted with an attacker brandishing a firearm, DO NOT RESIST! Your possessions can be replaced, your life can't!*
Unfortunately we have to take these precautions in order to enjoy an activity we love.
Safety first.
Be safe out there, and feel free to contact me if you require any assistance or advice regarding venues.

PS: Our weekend hikes will resume this coming weekend. Hike Masters have been on course, and I've been in recovery with an injury unfortunately.
