UPDATE: We thought they were just fixing the existing mural, but there's actually something brand new going up:
"The mural will include a large American flag, the medallions of all five armed services, and representatives of American workers in a variety of construction trades." See the Our Quad Cities link in commments for full story.
In other exciting Downtown news, they seem to be fixing the mural across from our Downtown Library! Nice work, Downtown Rock Island!

Why QC PastPort?
Our community, the Quad Cities, was founded around the 1830s. Prior to that, we had one of the largest Native American tribes in the area. Our area was one of the first places to develop West of the Mississippi. Consequently, this area has a rich history of pioneers, entrepreneurs, lumber barons, Civil War soldiers and their families. Our folks were involved with both sides of prohibition, gangsters, as well as a community pride in doing our part to help in the First and Second World Wars.
Dred Scott, Blackhawk, John Deere and Bix Beiderbecke lived here. The first railroad crossing on the Mississippi was here and Abraham Lincoln fought the legal case when that bridge was blown up. We had gangsters, prostitution and lots of new age music come out of here and we were successful in moving past that era. We are where agricultural machinery was king, lumber barons set-up roots and where innovators were born. Our history strongly reflects the greater history of how our country has grown since its founding and its one of the few places where many of these memories still hold dominion.
Over the past decade, a number of these buildings and memories have been torn down and destroyed. Rachel and Natalie have come to realize part of this is really because these treasures are not recognized for their place in history and why that is significant.
We chose QC PastPort as our name, because of what a passport represents to travelers. Your passport is a window to travel the world and take part in new, rich experiences, creating memories that can last a lifetime. Your PastPort is your key to exploring a world of vibrant stories, culture and intrigue you would think could only happen in a Hollywood movie. The best part? You don’t need to travel, its all right here in our community! There are portals to the past all over our community, some small and meek, others are towering structures we drive by every day. What they all have in common is that they have each played their unique part in paving the way to where we are today.
