Our third destination in our series postings on World, is Italy! 🇮🇹

The holiday season in Italy is a time of rich traditions, blending religious customs with festive celebrations. ⛪️ The season typically begins on December 8th with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a celebration that honors the Virgin Mary.

On Christmas Eve, known as “La Vigilia”, families come together for a delicious feast, featuring various fish dishes, following the Catholic practice of abstaining from eating meat on this day. Families who are living near the Vatican attend Midnight Mass, or “La Messa di Mezzanotte,” a significant religious ceremony with the Pope.

On Christmas Day, Italians celebrate with more feasting, featuring traditional dishes like panettone (a sweet bread) and pandoro (a golden cake), while also spending time exchanging gifts with loved ones. The festive season often extends to the day of Epiphany on January 6th, celebrated with gifts, parades, and “La Befana”, a friendly witch who delivers gifts to children. 🧙🎁

Germany is our next destination in our series postings on ! 🇩🇪

In Germany, there are many wonderful traditions that bring out the holiday spirit. The festive season officially begins on December 6th with St. Nicholas Day, where children eagerly await a visit from St. Nicholas, who rewards the good ones with small gifts and treats. 🎁 Krampus Nacht, on the other hand, is celebrated on December 5th and adds a touch of mischief to the holiday season. On this night, Germans dress up as Krampus, or “the Christmas Devil,” and roam around the streets searching for naughty children and frightening them to encourage good behavior. 👹

Germany also shares many festive traditions with the U.S, including hosting vibrant Christmas markets and coming together with family on Christmas Eve for a traditional meal, typically roast goose or carp. 🪿 The Christmas tree, a German invention, takes center stage, decorated with candles, ornaments, and tinsel. When the church bells ring on Christmas Eve, families exchange gifts and share the joy of the season. 🎄

Have you ever wondered how the holidays are celebrated in different countries around the world? 🤔🌎

Follow along this month for our series postings on , with our first destination being Sweden! 🇸🇪

While some traditions share similarities to those in the U.S, Sweden has its own unique flair when it comes to holiday festivities. First, Christmas is celebrated on December 24th as opposed to the 25th with gifts from Santa being opened after sunset instead of early morning. 🎁

Adding to the holiday spirit, every Christmas Eve at 3pm, Swedes gather to watch timeless Donald Duck cartoons, a tradition that dates back to the 1950s when the cartoons first aired. Unlike many places, there is no rush to take down Christmas decorations as the holiday season lasts until January 13th (St. Knut’s Day) in Sweden. 🎄
