Remember the telephone game with the can and string?

Communicating through an empty can of green beans connected to a long piece of yarn is much like communicating with a wedding team in a foreign country.

It is not just the language barrier that can cause issues, it is simply the process and expectations.

If after reading my blog post about what you could deal with if you work directly with a resort for your destination wedding, you still choose to go the DIY route, please do yourself a favor and ask the wedding team what you can expect from them and when.

A wedding timeline from them will help you avoid a lot of communication issues and sleepless nights wondering if there is something you should be doing that you’re unaware of.

Maybe that’s splurging for the upgraded suite, or booking a romantic candlelight dinner on the beach, or maybe setting up a couples massage in a beach palapa.

Calling all destination wedding couples! You have to know this...

If you are hosting a group of friends and family at a resort in the Caribbean or Mexico for your wedding, you must understand the terms and conditions.

In a nutshell - there are dates on which you will need to cancel unfilled rooms and there are dates when cancellation penalties occur.

If you choose to DIY your destination wedding, this is your responsibility and you will receive the bill for any fees - even if your guest cancels. Ugh.

The last thing you want to be worrying about is getting stuck owing hundreds of dollars for guests who said they were coming but then didn’t book their room, or guests who decide they can’t go because they realized how much the airfare costs were.

To protect you as a couple, I recommend working with a travel professional who specializes in destination wedding group travel.

Whether it is me or someone you know, I urge you to hire a professional to avoid costly mistakes.
