Florida Keys Crocodiles There were fewer than 200 when the American Crocodile was listed as endangered on the federal Endangered Species List in the 1970s.

Now it is estimated there may be as many as 2,000 through out South Florida.

Around 2,000 American crocodiles live in South Florida with 400 adults in Turkey Point alone.

In 2021, the Turkey Point team tagged 565 hatchlings, the largest number in the program’s history, Orlove said. In 2022, the team saw a record-breaking number of nests at 33, and the third largest number of hatchlings tagged and released with 512.

At Florida Power & Light's (FPL) Turkey Point nuclear power plant, crocodiles – that's right, not alligators – live in the canals that cool the steam.

Flamingo is "America's Crocodile Capital," the best place to see American crocodiles in the U.S. Despite their intimidating appearance, these reclusive reptiles have more to fear from people than we from them. Human activities threaten nesting sites, leading to fewer hatched eggs. In the 1980s, the National Park Service closed a small section of northeast Florida Bay, known locally as the "Crocodile Sanctuary," to protect nesting habitats. These efforts have helped downgrade crocodiles from endangered to threatened.

Since its listing as an endangered species in 1975, the American crocodile population in Florida has recovered from just a few hundred individuals to approximately 2,000 non-hatchling crocodiles – a conservation success story in the making! With this rise in population, sightings have increased and you may have heard about them in the news or online. This video addresses some frequently asked questions about this threatened species and FWRI’s current crocodile research.

Despite their shy and reclusive nature, be sure to respect their space and keep your distance. The future of this threatened species relies on the safe co-existence between humans and crocodiles.

The FWC had a different take on the method, saying in a statement sent to FOX 35, which read, "The FWC has tracked some crocodiles that were handled by Mr. Guinto. The movement data did not reflect any different behavior than other translocated crocodiles we tracked. This was not a formal study but rather observational data collection."

The agency also says, "It is important to note that it is illegal for a member of the public to handle or harass a crocodile without a permit from the FWC or USFWS [U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service]."

Central Florida is home to alligators, but crocodiles are known to make an appearance as well. An alligator can be relocated, but crocodiles are persistent and will return back to the area.

American crocodiles are a recovering threatened species native to South Florida and the Keys- but, recently there have been several sightings in the Satellite Beach area.

Earlier today [Oct. 13, 2023], this American crocodile was spotted in the unincorporated area of Satellite Beach. FWC was notified and a licensed trapper responded, safely trapped, and prepared the croc for relocation. Our SBPD officers were called upon to assist with some of the heavy lifting!

If you spot a croc, call 866-392-4286 (866-FWC-GATOR). FWC staff will offer educational information about safely living with crocodiles. If warranted, a site visit may be done to evaluate the location and behavior and determine a course of action.

Cooler weather may push the animal away, according to experts. "Chances are really high it’s going to head back south," said Joe Wasilewski who’s a conservation biologist in South Florida who specializes working with crocodiles. He’s worked with crocodiles for decades. He says unlike alligators, crocodiles need warmer water to thrive.

A crocodile is calling Brevard County home, and some neighbors say it needs to go before someone gets hurt.

Happy International Cat Day! Did you know that bobcats are one of two native cat species that call southern Florida home?

The bobcat is a small, short-tailed feline that successfully occupies a diversity of habitats such as cypress swamps, prairies, hardwood hammocks, and pine rocklands. They can be easily identified by their uniquely spotted, red-gold fur coat and their short "bobbed" tail.

So where can you see one? The truth is that it's rare to spot one in the wild. Bobcats are very shy and tend to avoid human contact. They are active primarily around sundown and sunrise and do not rest for more than a few hours at a time.

Despite their elusiveness, sightings and evidence of bobcat activity have been reported near Bear Lake Trail and the Snake Bight Trail in the Flamingo area, so keep an eye out on your next visit.

Have you seen any nesting American Crocodiles?

Slow down, female American crocodiles are nesting!

Mama crocs might be crossing roads more frequently as they search for just the right spot to build their nests. Some may even nest along the road, so please follow all posted speed limits. If you see a crocodile on or near the road, slow down to pass. Nesting crocodiles are shy and will abandon their nests if disturbed.

Please follow all posted speed limits, and be especially vigilant from nightfall until 2 hours after sunrise and from Paurotis Pond south to Flamingo.

While you’re enjoying being out on the water this long holiday weekend, keep your life and the lives of others around you safe by boating sober. In Florida, .08 blood/breath-alcohol level is over the limit and we have a zero-tolerance policy for operating a boat while under the influence EVERY day of the year!

It’s also important to never feed crocodiles, as this can lead to them becoming accustomed to humans and potentially aggressive.

The American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) is a large reptile native to the tropical regions of the Americas, such as Southern Florida.
