That time when busking in front of Paris Opera House was just a day in the life for a tour manager.
Molly Malone weirdly had the backing tune of no woman no cry but we made it work.
Wish I had taken my hood down but I remember how cold I was. 🤣

I was lucky enough to get a private tour of the Cutlers Hall in Sheffield by the Beadle. What a fascinating story not only hearing about the history behind The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire but also seeing the magnificent hall at first hand and seeing some of the treasures the Hall contains. Book a tour: Coal, Cake & Canal

The Bridgewater canal began life in 1761. Francis Egerton, the third Duke of Bridgewater, looked at his persistently flooded coalmines in the Irwell Valley and began to think big. Inspired by the canal he encountered on a trip to France, he realised that an artificial river could be a way of solving the problem within his mines and also providing the regions mills with the fuel they so badly needed. In turn, this would spark one of most pivotal moments in the story of human beings - the Industrial Revolution.

The canal was so effective that the price of coal in Manchester fell by over half within a year of its opening.

The Duke of Bridgewater died in 1803 and left his estates to his nephew George Granville Leveson-Gower on the agreement that his son Francis would adopt his family name of Egerton.

Francis (Earl of Ellesmere) and his wife, Lady Harriet moved to Worsley in 1837 and found it to be "a God forsaken place in a state of religious and educational destitution".

The Earl commissioned Sir George Gilbert Scott to build the magnificent St Mark's Church and established schools and courts in the village.

Our walk covers the industrial history and stories in Worsley around the canal and finishes with tea and cake.

Second Saturday of each month, 2pm from Worsley Delph

I’ve always had an interest in pre-history, regularly walking my dog up on Rombald’s Moor near Ilkley and exploring the cup and ring marked stones and stone circles. My interest had originally been spurred by a strange source – one of my musical heroes Julian Cope from the 80’s band the Tear...
