Sometimes it only takes a picture to make all the difference. In Bhutan, a picture has indeed changed the fate of the Bhutan Baseball and Softball Association after a photograph of Bhutanese baseball players dressed in national attire, playing in front of the Buddha Dordenma in Thimphu went viral on...

You have heard of archery and khuru but here’s a lesser-known traditional Bhutanese sport: soksom. It resembles the track and field javelin, involving the hurling of a spear (or simply a bamboo stick) across a distance of 20 metres. Unlike javelin however, the goal of soksom is to hit a target instead of covering the furthest distance. The game was popular in the past among cow herders who passed their time throwing spears while their cows grazed.

Bhutan's summer presents an extraordinary blend of natural beauty and thrilling adventures without missing out on the ubiquitous cultural experience. This is the time of the year the forests and vast landscapes of terrace fields are the greenest.

Chimi Lhakhang is a Buddhist temple located near Lobesa, about 30-minute drive from Punakha town. It was built by Ngawang Choegyel after the site was blessed by Lama Drukpa Kunley, famously known as the Divine Madman. People visit the temple mainly to seek fertility blessings from Lama Drukpa Kunley. Prayer flags adorn the path that leads to the temple from the Yuwakha village, and houses in the village have paintings of phalluses on their walls. It’s quite a sight!

Looking for a relaxing getaway? Katsho Eco Camp might have the answer.
The eco-camp is situated at an altitude of 2,900 metres, in the lush plains of Haa which used to be tsamdro (pasture land) for cattle belonging to the people of Bali and Mombitshokha villages.

Bhutan, known throughout most of its history as ‘The Land of Medicinal Herbs’ is famous for its pristine and conserved natural environment and the awe-inspiring landscapes that range from subtropical plains to steep mountains and valleys. Also one of the world’s top ten biodiversity hotspots, the constitution of the Kingdom of Bhutan requires the country to maintain at least 60% of its land under forest coverage at all times. With dramatic landscapes surrounded by stunning mountains and many endangered species of flora and fauna, Bhutan is truly a nature lover’s paradise.

The year is coming to an end. 2022 has been a significant transformative year for all Bhutanese, especially for the tourism sector. This year we reopened to tourism after almost two and half years of closed borders. Simultaneously, Bhutan launched a new brand identity that encapsulates the nation’s optimism for a better future while still being rooted in and guided by our culture, tradition, history and values.

26 December 2022:

His Majesty the King graced the inauguration of the Kurizam-Gyalposhing Highway, built under the Desuung National Service Road Project. The inauguration ceremony was presided over by His Holiness the Je Khenpo.

The road was widened and improved to a higher standard with the aim to pilot quality road construction, develop best practices that can be disseminated in the industry and to develop a critical mass of the necessary skills, processes and practices in this critical area of nation building.

This pioneering road project was undertaken by De-Suung in partnership with the Ministry of Works and Human Settlements following the highly successful water projects implemented by De-Suups across 20 Dzongkhags over the past years.

The project was designed to build capabilities of the De-Suups in all aspects of road construction so that they can become skilled workers, competent supervisors, effective managers and capable contractors in the future.

Towards that end, the project recruited a road designer, a material engineer and a project manager from a well reputed Japanese company to train the De-Suups and oversee the project. The objective of the project was to benchmark the quality of Bhutanese road construction to leading international standards with adequately designed road geometry, slope protection works, drainages, cross drainages, and proper road signs. It was also to sensitize and impart the best work culture, ethics and professionalism to our youth.

The 7.3 km road was built in exactly one year, starting from 17th December 2021. A total amount of Nu. 238 million was spent including procurement of specialized machines, hiring of international experts, and other trainings and logistics. A total of 167 De-Suups were engaged in the project. Six of them are now trained as skilled operators in specialized machines, 3 in surveying and 13 as skilled construction workers. All of them are equipped to assist and understand general construction practices.

While in Gyalpozhing, His Majesty also visited the Bongderma Gyalsung Academy Site and granted an Audience to the people working there.
