After the hustle and bustle of Christmas and New Year, Cornwall slows down, offering a calmer, more relaxed vibe. While the weather might be chillier, the beauty of Cornwall in January is truly something special. Here's why you should come to stay in Cornwall in January!

1. Empty Beaches
In summer, Cornwall’s beaches buzz with holidaymakers, but come January, you might just have the whole beach to yourself. If the weather’s on your side, enjoy a peaceful walk along the sands at Harlyn, Constantine, or Mawgan Porth. For a truly secluded escape, seek out the quiet coves of Porthcothan or Trevone.

2. Drinks by the Fire
There’s nothing like cozying up by a roaring fire on a chilly winter evening. Our Green Acres Cottages feature wood-burning stoves, perfect for unwinding after a day of adventure. Alternatively, head to local pubs like the London Inn, Shipwrights, or The Old Ship in Padstow, or visit the Farmers Arms or Cornish Arms in St Merryn for a fireside pint or two.

3. Amazing Surf
Winter in Cornwall means powerful, world-class, quality waves that attract surfing pros and enthusiasts alike. Whether you’re ready to hit the water or prefer watching from the shore, January delivers some of the best surf conditions of the year. Harlyn, Constantine, Mawgan Porth, and other hidden gems are prime spots to experience the thrill of winter surf.

4. Watching Storms
Winter storms are a natural spectacle in Cornwall, and there are plenty of incredible spots to watch the drama unfold. At Trevose Head, Atlantic waves crash spectacularly against the cliffs, sending spray high above the whitewashed lighthouse. For a cosier viewing experience, visit Watergate Bay and enjoy the stormy seas from the comfort of the Beach Hut restaurant.

5. Wintery Walks
Cornwall offers endless opportunities for walking enthusiasts. Beyond the famous South West Coast Path, the county is filled with trails, footpaths, and bridleways perfect for long rambles through stunning countryside. On clear days, take a breathtaking cliff walk at Bedruthan Steps, or head inland from Padstow along the Saints Way for panoramic views of the Camel Estuary and surrounding hills.

6. Indoor Activities and Attractions
When the weather turns, Cornwall’s indoor attractions come to the rescue. Explore the warm biomes and seasonal ice skating at the Eden Project, or dive into the county’s rich culture at museums and galleries. Feeling adventurous? Check out the Tide Climbing Centre near St Issey for an active day indoors.

7. Quiet Restaurants
Cornwall’s renowned restaurants are much easier to book during January. Secure a table at Paul Ainsworth’s Number 6, Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant, or Nathan Outlaw’s celebrated dining spots without the summer crowds. Alongside these iconic venues, you’ll have your pick of other excellent eateries throughout the region.

8. Quaint Villages
Cornwall’s picturesque villages take on an even more magical charm during the quiet winter months. Explore the peaceful streets of Trevone, St Issey, and Little Petherick near Padstow, or cross the estuary to enjoy a tranquil visit to Port Isaac, free from the usual crowds.

9. Beautiful Gardens
Even in winter, Cornwall’s gardens remain enchanting. Thanks to the mild south-west climate, places like Trelissick, Lanhydrock, and the Lost Gardens of Heligan showcase year-round beauty. Explore the lush jungle area at Heligan or visit Trebah Gardens near Falmouth for a dose of sub-tropical charm overlooking the Helford River.

10. Wide Choice of Accommodation
January is one of the quietest months for booking accommodation in Cornwall, giving you plenty of options for your winter escape. Whether you’re looking for a cosy self-catering cottage or a spacious villa or apartment on the north or south coast, you’ll have your pick—and all at budget-friendly low-season rates.

Enjoy the laid back atmosphere when holidaying in Mawgan Porth. It's a charming coastal village with an award-winning west facing sandy beach. Situated just four miles from Newquay and nine miles from Padstow, Mawgan Porth is a tranquil haven a world away from the bustle of its neighbours.

Enjoy the benefits of good surf, spectacular coastal views with the iconic South West Coast Path which runs right through the beachside town.

For a bit of history it's interesting to note that archaeological discoveries show that the area was inhabited during the Bronze and Iron Ages.

It's that time of year again! The Christmas Day swims are back!

A Christmas Day plunge in Cornwall is an exhilarating tradition! Many coastal communities have festive swims, where brave (or slightly bonkers!) souls take a chilly dip in the sea, often dressed in Santa hats or costumes. These events typically mix charity fundraisers and good-hearted holiday fun, drawing locals and visitors alike.

So, if you are one of those brave (or slightly bonkers) types who want to indulge in one of the vigorous swims in the sea this festive season, and you're not quite sure where to actually take the plunge this year, let us give you a few ideas.

Cornwall has many unofficially organised traditional swims (there are no websites or Facebook groups), but if you're staying in the area, they are worth watching!

Christmas Day: Coverack, Falmouth, Sennen, Bude, Polzeath, St Agnes, Porthtowan, Watergate Bay, Hayle Bay, and Cadgwith Cove.

Boxing Day: Poldhu, Charlestown, Porthminster, Perranporth, and Porthminster.

New Year’s Day: Newquay, Gorran, Looe, and Tintagel

If you are going to take part in one of these swims, stay safe and we wish you the best of luck. If you're going to watch the fun, wrap up warm.

If you're planning to join in this year, here are some top tips:
• Take your time getting in and don’t stay in too long
• Woolly hats are a cold swimmer’s best friend
• Wear all the layers when you get out and take your fluffiest beach towel – dry robes are ideal
• Hot water bottles are a great way to warm up
• Get stuck into some sugary food and a hot drink to replenish your energy – mulled wine, hot chocolate and mince pies always go down well

Bring festive vibes—the sillier the outfit, the better!

Surfing in North Cornwall is an absolute dream!
Winter can be a great time to surf in Cornwall, with consistent swells and quieter beaches. The best time to surf in Cornwall depends on your skill level and preferences, but autumn and winter are generally considered the best time for optimal conditions.

The stunning coastline is dotted with beaches like Polzeath, Fistral, and Watergate Bay, all renowned for their consistent surf and breathtaking views.

Here’s what makes North Cornwall a surfing hotspot:
🌊 Variety of Breaks: Whether you prefer larger beaches or smaller coves, there's plenty to choose from.
🏄‍♂️ Friendly Vibes: The local surf scene is welcoming, with plenty of surf schools and rental shops for newbies.
🌅 Natural Beauty: Even if you're not hitting the waves, the rugged cliffs and golden sands make it worth the trip.
🍻 Après Surf: After a session, relax at one of the many cosy pubs or beach cafes for some hearty Cornish food and drink.

When surfing in the winter, you should be aware of the following:
🌡Water temperatures can be very cold, so you might need a thicker wetsuit, gloves, and booties.
🌊Larger waves and stronger currents can be dangerous, especially for less experienced surfers.

20/12/2024

Have you seen the creative rock art by Harry Maddox of rocks up? Here are a few of his mind blowing rock sculptures that have been meticulously put together on our Cornish shores.

Asked why he dismantles his art, he explains the main reason is the safety of anyone or any animal that may come close. Some of the rocks he uses are particularly heavy and could do a considerable amount of damage,

The time frame for these creations are usually an hour or so (whilst his non-driving wife does the shopping). Harry gets to work with the stones, takes a photo or two and then dismantles it.

Occasionally we are lucky enough to see his art work pop up on the beach at Watergate Bay but even if we're not there in person, he often showcases his talent on Facebook. Well done Harry!
