I have had a really happy time during the last seven years watching my birds, enjoying Malaga’s stunning and very unknown landscapes, and showing both to our nature-loving visitors.

It is now time to make a difficult decision as I did not reach my goals.

I have accepted a job offer from a good friend of mine in Madrid. It has nothing to do with birds though I will keep in touch with the country side as I will extensively travel and explore new horizons all around Spain.

I acknowledge the help received from so many people during this time and I so much regret leaving my business project, city, friends and family for just some time.

Thank all for your good wishes about this new stage in my life. I will take you all in my heart wherever I go.

Durante los últimos siete años, no he podido ser más feliz observando mis pájaros, disfrutando de los maravillosos y poco conocidos paisajes de Málaga, y mostrando ambos a nuestros visitantes más amantes de la naturaleza.

Ahora llega el momento de tomar una difícil decisión al no haber alcanzado los objetivos que me propuse.

He aceptado una oferta de trabajo de un viejo amigo de Madrid. No tiene nada que ver con pájaros, aunque seguiré en contacto con el campo ya que viajaré y exploraré nuevos horizontes a lo largo y ancho de España.

Agradezco la ayuda recibida de tanta gente durante estos años y lamento mucho dejar mi plan de negocio, ciudad, amigos y familia por algún tiempo.

Muchas gracias por vuestros buenos deseos para con esta nueva etapa de mi vida. Os llevaré a todos en el corazón allá donde vaya.

Birding Big Day around The Route of 100 Birds / Big Day de pajareo por la Ruta de las 100 Aves (2019.05.22)

The long passage of waders that is taking place this year has made it easier to reach 114 different species in our big day!

The temperature was only 11 ºC when I arrived at Montes de Malaga. The Woodlarks were singing like crazy, and I could also hear Red-necked and European Nightjars and Scops Owl before dawn. The highlight at Montes was the presence of at least one Azure-winged Magpie there, well away from their headquarters around Archidona.

We spotted most of the regular gems at El Torcal, with very decent views of a Western Orphean Warbler singing from a hawthorn. There was a Whitethroat, which is not a very common breeding bird in this area, singing and marking his territory on the way down to Antequera. If it is a bird still on passage or it is going to breed here is something we should pay attention to in the coming weeks.

Given that the little pools at the entrance and around the wooden bridge at the Fuente de Piedra Lake Visitors Centre are already dry, I did not spent much time there, ticked the White Stork and Greater Flamingos on the list and went on towards the farmlands, where I saw all our possible larks (Crested, Calandra and Short-toad, plus the Thekla we observed at El Torcal), the Montagu’s Harrier and White-headed Duck, Red-crested Pochard, Glossy Ibis, Great Crested and Black-necked Grebes at Laguna Dulce.

WE stopped at El Chorro for some birds I had missed before, like Alpine Swift, Black Wheatear and Chough.

Our views of Bee-eaters and Little-ringed Plovers were fantastic at the Valley of the Guadalhorce, a good place to find the White Wagtails during the breeding season as well.

The visit to the Mouth of the Guadalhorce rounded off a fantastic day. There were still plenty of waders on passage at Rio Viejo, like Dunlin, Sanderling, Redshank, Black-tailed and Bar-tailed Godwits, Ringed and Grey Plovers along with the resident Kentish Plovers, Black-winged Stilts and Avocets. There were many young Audouin’s Gulls and still a lot of Slender-billed ones which might be showing some willing to breed in the area this year. There was a regular flow of Balearic Shearwaters flying east-west direction and we could spot maybe the last Gannet in the Bay of Malaga.

El largo paso de limícolas que está teniendo lugar este año ha hecho más fácil alcanzar un registro de 114 especies diferentes en nuestro “big day”.

La temperatura era de tan solo 11ºC cuando llegué a Los Montes. Las Totovías cantaban como locas, y también pude oír a los dos chotacabras (europeo y cuellirrojo) y el Autillo antes del amanecer. A destacar en Los Montes la presencia de al menos un Rabilargo, bien alejado de sus cuarteles generales en los alrededores de Archidona.

Conseguimos encontrar a la mayoría de nuestras joyas de El Torcal, con una muy decente observación de una Curruca mirlona cantando desde un majuelo. Había una Curruca zarcera, que no es una especie reproductora habitual en esta zona, cantando y marcando su territorio en la bajada hacia Antequera. Si se trata aún de un ave de paso o finalmente nidifica por aquí es algo a lo que deberemos prestar atención en las próximas semanas.

Toda vez que las charcas de la entrada y alrededores del puente de madera del Centro de Visitantes de la Laguna se han secado ya, no pasé mucho tiempo por allí, marqué la Cigüeña blanca y los Flamencos comunes en la lista, y continué hacia la Campiña de Guadalteba, donde observamos todas nuestras posibles aláudidas (Cogujada común, Calandria y Terrera común, más la Cogujada montesina, que ya había aparecido en El Torcal), el Aguilucho cenizo, y la Malvasía, Pato colorado, Morito, Somormujo y Zampullín cuellinegro en la Laguna Dulce.

Nos detuvimos en El Chorro en busca de algunas especies que nos habíamos perdido hasta el momento, como el Vencejo real, Collalba negra y Chova piquirroja.

Nuestras observaciones de Abejarucos y Chorlitejos chicos fueron excelentes en el Valle del Guadalhorce, un buen lugar también para encontrar a la Lavandera blanca durante la época de cría.

La visita a la Desembocadura del Guadalhorce fue la guinda a un fantástico día de pajareo. Aún quedan muchas limícolas de paso en el Río Viejo, como Correlimos común y tridáctilo, Archibebe común, Agujas colinegra y colipinta, Chorlitejo grande y Chorlito gris, además de los residentes Chorlitejos patinegros, Cigüeñuelas y Avocetas. Había muchos ejemplares jóvenes de Gaviota de Audouín y aún gran número de Gaviotas picofinas, que parecieran estar mostrando cierta intención de nidificar en la zona este año. Había un flujo constante de Pardelas baleares en vuelo este-oeste y observamos el que quizá sea el último Alcatraz en la Bahía de Málaga.

Naturetrek’s Go Slow in Southern Spain Tour 2019.05.12-18

The city of Malaga has hosted a top birdwatching tour operator’s week holiday around The Route of 100 Birds for the first time.

According to Naturetrek’s “Go Slow…” philosophy, the group enjoyed our birding spots in The Route of 100 Birds (El Torcal, Fuente de Piedra Lake and farmlands, Montes de Malaga, El Chorro and Mouth of the Guadalhorce), the most emblematic monuments, museums and gardens in the city of Malaga and Andalucia’s tasty gastronomy.

Our bird list at the end of the tour included 103 species, the highlights of the trips being the Melodious Warbler, Rock Sparrow and Black-eared Wheatear at El Torcal; Black-necked Grebe, White-headed Duck, Montagu’s Harrier, Bee-eater, Greater Flamingo, Curlew Sandpiper, Avocet and White Stork at the Fuente de Piedra Lake; Western Bonelli’s Warbler and Firecrest at Montes de Malaga; Griffon Vulture, Common Crossbill, Bonelli’s Eagle, Thekla Lark and Dartford Warbler at El Chorro; and Black-winged Stilt, Slender-billed and Audouin’s Gulls, Kentish Plover, Collared Pratincole and other waders, specially Sanderling, Black-tailed Godwit, Dunlin and Grey and Ringed Plovers in gorgeous summer plumage.

La ciudad de Málaga ha acogido por primera vez una semana de turismo de observación de aves en la Ruta de las 100 Aves por parte de uno de los más importantes turoperadores del sector.

De acuerdo con la filosofía “Go slow…” (vacaciones “tranquilas”) de Naturetrek, el grupo ha disfrutado de lugares de observación en la Ruta de las 100 Aves (El Torcal, Fuente de Piedra y campiña, Montes de Málaga, El Chorro y Desembocadura del Guadalhorce), de los más emblemáticos monumentos y jardines de la ciudad de Málaga y de la sabrosa gastronomía andaluza.

BBC Wildlife Tour – Part. 5: Montes de Málaga

Our last day at Hotel Humaina and The Route of 100 Birds. The Wild Board family visited the hotel every day and today we could also spot the Red Squirrel, many butterflies (Swallowtail, Scarce Swallowtail, Meadow Brown, Marsh Fritillary and Blues) and the elusive forest birds like Western Bonelli’s Warbler, Crested Tit and Common Crossbill.

Nuestro último día en el Hotel Humaina y la Ruta de las 100 Aves. La familia de Jabalíes ha visitado el hotel todos los días y hoy hemos podido encontrar a la Ardilla roja, muchas mariposas (Macaón, Chupaleches, Loba, Ondas rojas y algunas pequeñas azules) y esquivas especies forestales como el Mosquitero papialbo, Herrerillo capuchino y Piquituerto común.

In a very hot week down here in the south of Spain, we have been blessed by the clouds the day we have visited the hottest part of Spain! And we have also enjoyed most of the Sevillian Farmlands gems: Great and Little Bustards, Stone Curlew, Roller, Lesser Kestrel and Olivaceous Warbler.

BBC Wildlife Tour – Part. 3: Mouth of the Guadalhorce (2019.05.08)

There was a big passage of Black Kites and some Booted Eagles at Montes de Malaga on the way to the Mouth of the Guadalhorce, where seagulls starred the trip (Yellow-legged, Black-headed, Slender-billed, Mediterranean and Audouin’s were present) and the first chicks of the Black-winged Stilts showed up as well as other interesting birds like the Collared Pratincole.

Había un buen paso de Milanos negros y algunas Águilas calzadas en Los Montes de camino al Paraje, donde las gaviotas protagonizaron la jornada (patiamarilla, reidora, picofina, cabecinegra y de Audouín se encontraban presentes) y se dejaron ver los primeros polluelos de las Cigüeñuelas así como alguna otra especie interesante como la Canastera.

BBC Wildlife Tour – Part 2: Laguna de Fuente de Piedra (2019.05.07)

We have enjoyed a lot of birds of our inland lakes, like Greater Flamingo, White-headed Duck, Great Crested and Black-necked Grebes, Red-crested Pochard and different species of resident and on passage waders, as well as steppe birds like Stone Curlew and Lesser Kestrel, and other animals like snakes and dragonflies.

2019 Montagu’s Harrier Protection Campaign (2) / Campaña de Protección del Aguilucho cenizo 2019 (2) (2019.04.24)

We have found a more erratic behaviour of the harriers around Sierra de Yeguas and made some good observations of other birds like Little Bustard, Whinchat and Woodchat Shrike.

Despite the uncertain weather forecast, we have enjoyed a fantastic morning at the Mouth of the Guadalhorce today, with 53 different species recorded during the trip.

We were blessed by the songs of the Blackcaps and Serins while waiting by the church for the group to gather, where we could also spot some Bonelli’s Warblers in the canopy.

We could also hear some Reed Warblers and Nightingales in the reeds and tamarisk on the way and within the reserve, though they were hiding very deep into the vegetation today possibly due to the breeze.

There were lots of House Sparrows, Barn Swallows and House Martins around the bridge as well as Greenfinches feeding on the ground, next to the track. There were also some Grey Herons and a Kestrel after the voles next to the Laguna Escondida.

It was a little chilly at the Laguna Escondida hide as the wind was blowing from the north, keeping some Pochards, Moorhens and Coots at the opposite bank, sheltered from the unpleasant wind. But the wind was not a problem for the tiny Zitting Cisticolas to perform their wavy zit-zit flights to mark their territories around the hide.

We moved on to the Laguna de la Casilla hide where we spotted our first White-headed Ducks and Black-winged Stilts, and two couples of Gadwalls. Some Sardinian Warblers showed up in the tamarisks while heading to the Rio Viejo hide from where we had nice views of a lot of Black-winged Stilts, some Redshanks, a common Sandpiper, a Ringed Plover and an Iberian Yellow Wagtail.

There were some more waders at the lake on the way to the beach: Sanderlings, Avocets, Dunlins and Kentish Plovers, as well as a pair of Crested Larks next to the banks of the river. We could clearly hear the song of an Orphean Warbler from here though, unfortunately, it was behaving as the Reed Warblers, Nightingales and Cetti’s Warblers we had listened to before.

In spite of the wind, the sea was very flat and we could spot a big flock of Lesser Black-backed Gulls enjoying their last days on the Costa del Sol, as well as some Bottlenose Dolphins we could see very well through the scopes.

After walking across the beach, where we had great views of a nice Woodchat Shrike, we finished our visit at the Laguna Grande hide, where we were eager to find the Bonaparte’s Gull that has been here for the last three weeks. After scanning a big flock of gulls at the opposite side of the lake composed of an Audouin’s Gull, many beautiful Slender-billed Gulls and Sandwich Terns, some Mediterranean and a lot of Black-headed Gulls, we eventually found the Bonaparte’s Gull swimming in the middle of the pool, with its shorter black bill, smaller than a black-headed one and erratic movements to pick some food up from the water surface.

Once the Bonaparte’s mission was accomplished, we paid more attention to a nice flock of Greater Flamingos, some more White-headed Ducks, a Greenshank and more Kentish and Ringed Plovers, Redshanks and some Sanderlings in beautiful spring plumage just in front of the hide.

Our last bird on the way out was a Pied Flycatcher, one of the various birds on passage we saw today. Great birding in the best possible company!

Bird watching at Fuente de Piedra Lake and Guadalteba Farmlands / Pajareando por la Laguna de Fuente de Piedra y la Campiña de Guadalteba (2019.04.04)

My friend Richard, an avid Canadian birder, was eager to go out and know one of the most important birding areas in Andalusia after getting excellent grades in his 5-week Spanish course. And Maria José, with Hotel Humaina, had long been waiting to join one of the trips to this amazing Flamingo’s sanctuary. So we enjoyed stunning landscapes and birds in sweet weather and very good company.

We spotted most of the farmland gems like Little Bustard, Calandra Lark and Montagu’s Harrier. The Laguna Dulce de Campillos left nice views of White-headed Ducks, Great Crested and Black-necked Grebes. The number of Greater Flamingos is increasing in the lake and some first of the season, like the Wheatear in the farmlands, Bonelli’s Warbler in the blooming Holm Oaks and Curlew Sandpiper at the ponds of the Visitors Centre show we are in the middle of the spring migration.

We had seen some Griffon Vultures in the distance and a hazy atmosphere in the morning so we stopped in the mountains on the way back to Malaga to try some closer views of them which we really had, plus the songs of the Thekla Larks and a short appearance of the Golden Eagle which came out from behind the ridges, turned over the summit for a moment and vanished after a long dive for our most complete delight.

La Laguna de Fuente de Piedra y la campiña lucen fantásticas este año y acabamos nuestra lista con 70 especies registradas.

Mi amigo Richard, un avezado observador de aves canadiense, estaba impaciente por salir a conocer uno de los lugares más importantes de Andalucía para el disfrute de las aves tras haber sacado unas notas estupendas en su curso intensivo de español. Y María José, nuestra colaboradora en el Hotel Humaina, llevaba tiempo queriendo unirse a una de nuestras excursiones a este asombroso santuario de los Flamencos. Así que todos disfrutamos de espectaculares paisajes y aves en agradable temperatura y muy buena compañía.

Pudimos avistar a la mayoría de las joyas de la campiña, incluidos Sisón, Calandria y Aguilucho cenizo. La Laguna Dulce de Campillos nos dejó bonitas estampas de Malvasías, Somormujos y Zampullines cuellinegros. El número de Flamencos aumenta en la laguna y algunos “primeros” de la temporada, como la Collalba gris en la campiña, el Mosquitero papialbo en las encinas en flor, y los Correlimos zarapitines en las charcas del Centro de Visitantes, ponen de manifiesto un buen paso primaveral.

Habíamos visto algunos Buitres leonados a mucha distancia con mucha refracción, así que nos detuvimos en las montañas de vuelta a Málaga para intentar verlos más de cerca, lo que realmente conseguimos, además de presenciar los cantos y una fugaz aparición del Águila real, que apareció desde las crestas, cicleó sobre las cumbres por un momento, y desapareció en un fugaz picado para nuestra más completa satisfacción.

March 2019 Birding Big Day around The Route of 100 Birds / Big Day de pajareo de marzo 2019 por la Ruta de las 100 Aves (2019.03.23)

The strong breeze that was blowing in Malaga could not stop us get a list of 109 different species.

None of the “before dawn” singers have started their concerts at Montes de Malaga yet, though we could observe most of the ordinary forest birds including very active Hawfinches that seem to be nesting in the area.

El Torcal also confirmed the breeding of the Bonelli’s Eagles in the nearby cliffs though most of the most interesting observations took place at the Fuente de Piedra Lake, with a Slender-billed Gull still around, the first Reed Warbler of the season and some Spotted Crakes visible from the wooden bridge.

The Guadalteba farmlands also contributed with Lesser Kestrels hovering over the arable land, a male Little Bustard in typical territorial mode, calling and showing his black scarf, the first Montagu’s Harrier, still two Curlews and the famous Little Crake around the Laguna Dulce.

The Mouth of the Guadalhorce provided eleven new species for the list. We could see the three of our small plovers (Ringed, Little Ringed and Kentish) together just in front of the Laguna Grande hide, some Garganeys, which are not very common here, Mediterranean and Audouin’s Gulls.

El fuerte temporal de viento que azotaba la provincia de Málaga no nos impidió terminar la jornada con 109 especies en la lista.

Ninguno de los “cantantes antes del amanecer” ha comenzado sus conciertos en los Montes de Málaga todavía, aunque pudimos observar a la mayoría de las habituales especies forestales, incluidos unos muy activos Picogordos que parece van a criar en la zona.

El Torcal también nos confirmó la cría del Águila perdicera en uno de sus cortados cercanos, aunque la mayoría de las más interesantes observaciones tuvo lugar en la Laguna de Fuente de Piedra, con la Gaviota picofina aún por estos lares, el primer Carricero común de la temporada y algunas Polluelas pintojas a la vista desde el puente de madera.

La campiña de Guadalteba también contribuyó con Cernícalos primilla campeando por los sembrados, un macho de Sisón en la típica actitud territorial, cantando y mostrando su bufanda negra, el primer Aguilucho cenizo, todavía dos Zarapitos reales y la famosa Polluela bastarda en los alrededores de la Laguna Dulce.

El Paraje de la Desembocadura aportó once especies nuevas a la lista. Pudimos ver a nuestros tres chorlitejos (grande, chico y patinegro) juntos frente al observatorio de la Laguna Grande, algunas Cercetas carretonas, que no son muy comunes por aquí, y Gaviotas cabecinegras y de Audouín.
